Dive into DMZ: A Fresh Take on Extraction in Modern Warfare 4

Modern Warfare 4 is gearing up to introduce a revamped extraction experience with its new DMZ mode, and it’s not just a simple add-on this time around. Geoff Smith, the creative director for multiplayer, expressed confidence during a recent press session, stating, “We actually made a proper DMZ this time.”

After taking the time to check out Infinity Ward last month—responsible for the series’ iconic beginnings—I got the chance to test out what might just be the ultimate multiplayer experience in the Call of Duty franchise. But let’s be honest, what piqued my interest the most was DMZ, touted as a standout feature throughout the day.

This isn’t Infinity Ward’s first attempt at this, as the previous DMZ mode from Modern Warfare 2 (2022) was seen as a bit too simplistic, an easy entry into the Escape From Tarkov-style extraction gameplay. Despite ongoing updates throughout the year, it eventually faded into the background of Call of Duty’s many experiments. With the new DMZ, however, Infinity Ward is stepping up and skipping the whole beta phase.

Here’s what you need to know about DMZ:

  • Map: Set in Haijin, a devastated nuclear exclusion zone located on the North-South Korea border, featuring various settlements.
  • Your Role: You’ll step into the shoes of an off-the-books CIA asset, self-funded and on the lookout for valuable military tech.
  • Persistent Gear: Loot you extract can be sold or utilized for upgrades and crafting.
  • FOB (Forward Operating Base): A central hub that players can upgrade over time with different workstations and crafting benches.
  • Story Missions: You can engage in story missions that unfold in real-time during live matches.
  • Dynamic Operations & Free Roam: These modes include repeatable missions with randomized elements, allowing for a mix of structured and spontaneous gameplay.
  • Loadouts: Your gunsmith designs from multiplayer carry over, but you’ll need to purchase attachments to utilize them.

Smith mentioned, “We’ve learned a lot from our previous beta. All that feedback has helped us lay the groundwork for this new iteration of DMZ from scratch.” He described DMZ as more than just an extra mode; it’s like having a whole new game packed within Modern Warfare.

What’s also intriguing is that DMZ will feature its very own progression systems and inventories, separate from the traditional 6v6 multiplayer gameplay. Operators who are simply character skins in the multiplayer mode will have unique inventories in DMZ. While your Gunsmith setups will transfer, acquiring those essential attachments will be necessary.

Another exciting aspect to look forward to is a bounty system that takes into account your reputation. If you rack up kills consistently, a bounty will be placed on your head, making you a target for other players. Plus, global leaderboards will showcase the top 50 killer and bounty hunter each week!

It seems like DMZ is shaping up to be an impressive addition as a likely third option on the main menu of Modern Warfare 4. While I didn’t get a chance to experience it firsthand just yet, the anticipation is building as we await its launch.

Mark your calendars—DMZ drops with Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, and it won’t be available as a free-to-play option.
