Exciting Changes Ahead for Fellowship: Loot 2.0 on the Horizon!

The developers behind the early access co-op RPG, Fellowship, have a tricky task ahead of them: convincing players that the loot they love might just be too good! While many fans have relished diving into MMO-like dungeons without all the tedious grind, the team believes that the current loot system is actually stifling the game’s potential as a true action RPG.

In a recent video, game director Axel Lindberg shared the vision for Fellowship’s future. “We want every chest at the end of a dungeon to feel thrilling,” he stated. “Our goal is to ensure that items are not just basic gear, but also offer unique potential to enhance gameplay.” The developers feel that the loot is currently too straightforward, which makes gameplay less interesting. Once players fill their inventory with the best items, they start to overlook the excitement of looting.

One major challenge is that Fellowship primarily revolves around dungeon runs, making the character leveling process much quicker compared to games like World of Warcraft. Developer Chief Rebel aims to redefine character builds by introducing more intricate item interactions. This will not only engage players in selecting their upgrades but also add layers to character customization.

To shake things up, the upcoming “Loot 2.0” update is set to give items random bonus stats at drop. Basic stats like health and defense will still be present, but now there will be a selection of secondary stats that aren’t guaranteed. Plus, items will randomly feature ranks in traits from each character’s skill tree, motivating players to hunt for gear with desirable traits to amplify their power.

There are, of course, concerns that these changes could lead to a frustrating grind. If a piece of equipment that usually has solid stats suddenly drops with some subpar ones, it could definitely be disheartening. Chief Rebel needs to hit the right balance; otherwise, the experience could turn into a frustrating race for perfect RNG gear. Players of WoW might recall the days when items could randomly upgrade, which often led to complaints. But if item drops maintain enough consistency and value, it could pave the way for diverse playstyles.

Lindberg also noted that the goal is to empower players to tackle challenging dungeon modifiers with their gear choices. For instance, some dungeons filled with tougher enemies might require a focus on survivability, while speed-focused dungeons could shift the priority to maximizing damage output.

As exciting as this sounds, the team wants to ensure that while there will always be “best-in-slot” items, they will also open up the options to create more varied builds. This direction is thrilling, as it leans Fellowship closer to action RPGs like Diablo, where loot genuinely influences character abilities and gameplay dynamics.

The Early Access phase is the perfect time for these changes to be tested, allowing developers to refine the system without losing the game’s charm. To gather player feedback, Chief Rebel has scheduled a playtest for the changes on May 20. The full loot overhauls are expected to roll out with season 3 in June, promising fresh excitement for all players.
