From the Ashes: Wuchang Soulslike Sequel is Officially Happening with Original Creator Back!
Remember Wuchang: Fallen Feathers? The dark, atmospheric Soulslike that really grabbed attention, even if it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea? Well, we’ve got some massive news for fans of the game and the genre! After a period of uncertainty, it’s officially confirmed that a sequel is in the works, and even better, the original mastermind behind it all is back at the helm!
For those who followed the journey of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, you’ll know it was quite a success for Chinese developer Leenzee and publisher 505 Games, attracting a whopping five million players across all platforms. That’s a huge number for any new IP, especially in the challenging Soulslike space!
However, the story behind the scenes got a bit complicated earlier this year. Reports suggested that the game’s director and producer, Xia Siyuan, had parted ways with Leenzee, and several other staff members were also reportedly let go. This left the future of the unique Wuchang universe hanging by a thread, especially after the game’s intellectual property (IP) was acquired by 505 Games’ parent company, Digital Bros, for a cool $4.6 (approx. Rs 1,280) million back in April.
But hold onto your swords, gamers, because the saga isn’t over! In a move that’s sure to excite many, Xia Siyuan is making a grand return to the franchise he created. He’s now leading his very own new studio, Indolphinity (officially known as Chengdu Recursive Dolphin Technology), and they’ve officially partnered with 505 Games to develop a brand-new chapter for the Wuchang IP!
This is fantastic news for anyone who appreciated the original game’s vision. A recent announcement from 505 Games confirmed that the Wuchang sequel has already entered its preparation phase. Indolphinity will be taking the creative lead, ensuring the sequel stays true to its roots and original vision, while 505 Games will handle the funding and global publishing, bringing the game to players worldwide. The best part? Development will remain firmly based in China, promising to maintain that authentic cultural essence.
Xia Siyuan himself expressed his excitement about this renewed collaboration, stating that as a homegrown Chinese development team, they deeply believe in their rich cultural heritage as the core strength of their games. He also praised 505 Games for their respect for the creative process and their understanding of developers’ needs, which aligns perfectly with Indolphinity’s values.
Digital Bros co-CEO Raffi Galante also chimed in, highlighting their strong belief in Wuchang becoming a long-term global franchise. This partnership seems like a perfect match, offering the original creator the freedom to innovate while having the backing of a major publisher.
While taking on giants like FromSoftware in the Soulslike genre is no easy feat, it’s incredibly reassuring to see that Wuchang isn’t being left behind. Instead, its original creator and team are getting a well-deserved second shot at bringing more of this captivating world to life. We can’t wait to see what new challenges and lore await us in the next installment!
