Gamers, Imagine This: A Full Nvidia GPU Running on Windows on Arm!
For ages, Windows on Arm devices have been largely tied to Snapdragon processors and their integrated Adreno graphics. But what if you could slap a powerful, standalone Nvidia graphics card into one of these machines? Well, a developer has just given us a tantalizing glimpse into that very future, and it’s got us pretty hyped!
A brilliant mind on the Chinese platform Bilibili, known as VoidTech, has pulled off something remarkable: they managed to get a regular Nvidia RTX 4060 graphics card up and running on Windows on Arm. This isn’t some custom-made Arm GPU; we’re talking about a mainstream desktop card, albeit through some clever workaround.
How did they do it? VoidTech reportedly used a modified driver based on the “RTX Spark laptop driver.” For those not in the know, Nvidia recently announced RTX Spark, their own Arm processor with serious graphical muscle. While the driver used here is an older version (590, compared to our current 610.74), the fact that it’s based on an RTX Spark driver is a huge indicator of what might be possible down the line.
Now, before you start dreaming of ultra-portable gaming rigs with desktop-tier performance, let’s manage expectations. While getting it to work at all is a massive achievement, the current gaming performance isn’t exactly mind-blowing. In the Black Myth: Wukong benchmark, the RTX 4060 managed an average of 21 frames per second at 1080p on medium settings with ray tracing off (and DLSS used just for anti-aliasing).
To put that into perspective, on a standard Windows PC, the RTX 4060 can comfortably hit around 50 fps on high settings with similar anti-aliasing. So, a 21 fps average is far from ideal for a smooth gaming experience. But hold on, there are good reasons for this!
Firstly, these are unofficial, experimental drivers – not optimized for this specific setup. Secondly, the developer was running this on a Huawei Kunpeng 920 processor, which is primarily designed for server applications, not the kind of high-performance gaming you’d expect from a desktop CPU. So, the hardware itself wasn’t exactly a gaming powerhouse.
This breakthrough, however, opens up some exciting possibilities. Nvidia has already promised impressive performance from its official RTX Spark chip, touting 100 fps at 1440p in modern games. Early hands-on with RTX Spark playing Alan Wake 2 were reportedly very smooth. VoidTech’s experiment hints that Nvidia might struggle to keep its drivers exclusive to its own Spark chip once they’re out in the wild. If developers can adapt them for other Nvidia cards, it could mean a much broader future for discrete GPUs on Windows on Arm.
Let’s not forget, there have been hints of this potential for a while. Even early Qualcomm X Elite development units showed references to PCIe graphics connections in their BIOS, suggesting that the underlying architecture has always had the latent capability for dedicated graphics cards. It all comes down to robust driver support and how well the software ecosystem catches up.
So, while your next gaming laptop probably won’t be an Arm device with a discrete RTX 4060 *just yet*, this developer’s work is a fantastic first step. It shows us that the boundaries of Windows on Arm are constantly being pushed, and the future of gaming on these portable platforms could be far more exciting than we ever imagined!
