Gamescom Faces Setback as Theft Strikes, But Industry Stands United
This year’s Gamescom was supposed to be an exciting showcase of upcoming video games, but it hit a snag with reports of thefts dampening the mood. Indie developer Ryan Laley was among those affected, revealing that his gear was stolen from his booth, hitting him hard both financially and emotionally.
However, not all hope was lost. The gaming community has come together to support Laley, with CD Projekt Red—the team behind beloved titles like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077—stepping up. They reached out on social media, offering assistance and expressing their belief that “no choom should have to start from zero.”
Laley expressed his gratitude towards CD Projekt Red and others in the industry who extended their help. A special mention went to marketing consultant Indie Game Joe, who donated funds to help Laley replace his stolen equipment. In a show of support, Joe also encouraged gamers to wishlist Laley’s upcoming project, Mimic.
Sadly, Laley’s incident wasn’t an isolated case. Another developer, Iam8bit, reported that two laptops were stolen from their booth as well, containing early demos for their upcoming titles, Petal Runner and Escape Academy 2. This incident occurred despite security measures being in place.
As the Gamescom team investigates these thefts, the community’s support shines a light on the solidarity that exists within the gaming world. We’ll keep you updated as the situation develops.
