Gears of War Legend Cliff Bleszinski Eyes Epic Comeback – No PvP This Time!
Big news for all the Gears of War fans out there! The legendary game developer, Cliff Bleszinski, affectionately known as CliffyB, is seriously considering a full-time return to game development after an eight-year hiatus from the gaming world. This is huge for anyone who remembers the thrill of chainsawing Locusts!
For those unfamiliar, CliffyB is the creative genius behind the iconic Gears of War franchise. He left the industry in 2018 after his studio, Boss Key Productions, unfortunately, didn’t quite hit the mark. Their games, the multiplayer arena shooter LawBreakers and the ’80s-themed Battle Royale Radical Heights, struggled to find their audience, leading to the studio’s closure. Back then, Bleszinski even swore off making games for good.
But it seems time, and some personal challenges, have brought a fresh perspective. In a recent candid chat, CliffyB revealed he’s been busy since leaving games – writing an autobiography, producing a Tony award-winning musical, and bravely tackling a long-standing personal battle with alcoholism. After a hospitalization in March this year, he made the courageous decision to embrace sobriety. It’s during this period of clarity and renewed focus that he’s rediscovered his deep-seated love for games and the burning desire to create them.
He put it beautifully, stating his desire to “create characters and worlds,” and “make stuff that people will cosplay and get tattooed on their bodies.” Now that’s passion! He even dipped his toes back in by consulting on a horror title called Soul Walker, and it seems that experience has been a positive one, prompting him to ponder a full-time comeback.
However, there’s one thing he’s pretty clear about *not* doing: more PvP multiplayer games, especially after his last attempts. He explicitly stated, “Good luck to anyone in that space,” referring to the highly competitive PvP market. Instead, he’s leaning heavily into Player vs. Environment (PvE). He even reminded us how “Horde mode saved Gears 2,” emphasizing that PvE offers that “evergreen” appeal where gamers just want to squad up with friends, blast some enemies, and have pure, unadulterated fun, no frills attached.
While he’s keeping details under wraps about any potential new game, he did drop a cryptic hint: “I can’t walk into a Home Depot without seeing a full arsenal at every turn,” adding that “There’s so much more than just chainsaws.” Sounds like we can expect some serious action and creativity from him if he truly steps back into the development ring!
Of course, this is all still in the “considering” phase. He had a similar urge to make a “little game” back in 2020 that didn’t publicly materialize. But this time, it feels different, fueled by a rediscovered passion and a clear vision for the type of games he wants to create. We at PakGamersHub are definitely rooting for his return and can’t wait to see what amazing worlds he might craft next!
