Ghost of Yōtei Has Sold 1.6 Million Fewer Copies Than Ghost of Tsushima, but Revenue Is Nearly Identical

Ghost of Yōtei may be trailing Ghost of Tsushima in sales, but new estimates from Alinea Analytics suggest that the sequel is generating almost as much revenue despite selling significantly fewer copies.

According to Alinea Analytics, Ghost of Yōtei has sold approximately 5.4 million copies, generating an estimated $407 million in revenue. By comparison, Ghost of Tsushima had sold nearly 7 million copies at the same point in its commercial lifecycle, bringing in around $418 million.

The figures highlight an interesting difference between the two PlayStation titles. While Ghost of Yōtei has sold roughly 1.6 million fewer copies, the estimated revenue gap stands at just $11 million, or approximately 2.6%.

Ghost of Yōtei Is Generating Almost as Much Revenue

The estimated figures suggest that Ghost of Yōtei is earning considerably more revenue per copy sold than its predecessor. Based on the reported totals, the sequel generates approximately $75 per copy, compared with around $60 for Ghost of Tsushima.

However, these figures represent estimated revenue divided by estimated unit sales, rather than the actual price paid by every customer. Regional pricing, different editions, discounts, platform sales, and the methodology used to calculate revenue can all affect the comparison.

Nevertheless, the relatively small revenue gap is notable given the substantial difference in estimated sales. It suggests that unit sales alone may not tell the complete story of the sequel’s commercial performance.

Is Ghost of Yōtei Really a Flop?

Despite selling fewer copies than Ghost of Tsushima at the comparable point, some critics have questioned whether Ghost of Yōtei has lived up to expectations.

Elliott pushed back against those claims, stating: “Anyone who says that Ghost of Yotei is a flop is flat-out wrong.”

The estimated $407 million in revenue certainly challenges the idea that the game has performed poorly in absolute commercial terms. However, determining whether a game is financially successful also requires information about its development budget, marketing expenses, platform fees, and other costs.

A game can generate hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue without necessarily delivering the same profit margins as another title. Without verified cost figures, it is difficult to draw definitive conclusions about profitability.

How It Compares With Ghost of Tsushima

The comparison between the two games illustrates why sales numbers and revenue should be considered separately.

Ghost of Tsushima had a clear advantage in units sold at the same stage, reaching nearly 7 million copies compared with the sequel’s estimated 5.4 million. Yet the difference in estimated revenue was relatively small, with the original generating around $418 million against the sequel’s $407 million.

For Sony, the figures provide a more nuanced picture of the sequel’s performance than unit sales alone would suggest. Although Ghost of Yōtei has not matched its predecessor’s estimated sales pace, its reported revenue remains remarkably close.

Ultimately, the estimates indicate that Ghost of Yōtei is a substantial commercial release, even if its sales trajectory differs from that of Ghost of Tsushima. Whether it will eventually close the sales gap remains to be seen.
