Is Tencent’s GTA Rival ‘Last Sentinel’ on the Brink? Layoffs Rock Developer Lightspeed LA

Big news hitting the gaming world, and unfortunately, it’s not the celebratory kind. It seems Tencent’s highly ambitious project, Last Sentinel, which was touted as a potential cyberpunk rival to the mighty Grand Theft Auto series, is facing some serious turbulence. The developer behind it, Lightspeed LA, has reportedly laid off a significant chunk of its staff – around 80 people – as its publisher, Tencent, appears to have lost faith in the game’s direction.

For those of you who might not be familiar with Last Sentinel, you’re not alone. Despite being in development for a good six years, the game only made a fleeting public appearance at The Game Awards in 2023. The vision was grand: an expansive open-world cyberpunk experience set in a stunning, vertically designed city in a futuristic Japan. Think destructible environments, high-octane driving, and intense shooting – everything you’d expect from a GTA-style sandbox but with a distinct neon-noir twist.

However, doubts about the project’s health started circulating last year. Promotional videos released by the team mysteriously lacked any actual gameplay footage, which always raises an eyebrow among gamers. This, coupled with multiple delays and at least one partial reboot of the project, painted a picture of a game struggling to find its footing.

Recent reports suggest that the challenges ran much deeper. Insiders indicate that Lightspeed LA was working with a considerably smaller team compared to what Rockstar typically employs for its massive open-world titles. On top of that, the team reportedly grappled with an unclear creative vision and a management style, led by former Rockstar San Diego director Steve Martin, that proved to be quite divisive.

The final straw, it seems, came earlier this year. After a less-than-stellar playtest and an unimpressive demonstration to Tencent executives, Lightspeed LA reportedly scrambled to refine Last Sentinel. But whatever improvements they made weren’t enough to sway Tencent, who has now reportedly withdrawn its backing from the project. This is a massive blow, especially for a game with such large-scale aspirations.

Now, to be clear, Last Sentinel hasn’t been officially cancelled just yet. Lightspeed LA is reportedly still working on the game, but now without the financial muscle and support of Tencent. The studio has indicated plans to “shift the creative and development direction” of the game to “meet player expectations.”

This leaves us wondering: how will Lightspeed LA deliver on the promise of a sprawling, GTA-esque cyberpunk world, especially when players were set up to expect exactly that, but now without their main publisher? The road ahead looks incredibly challenging for Last Sentinel, and we’ll be keeping a close eye on its fate.
