Last Flag Studio Restructures: A Shift Towards Player-Driven Development

In a surprising turn of events, Night Street Games, the studio behind the unique CTF shooter Last Flag, has announced significant layoffs, letting go of around half of its team. This shift comes as the studio navigates through tough waters in the gaming market, despite its intriguing concept and the star power of its co-founders, Mac and Dan Reynolds, known for their roles in the band Imagine Dragons.

Initially, Last Flag gained attention for its promising gameplay, with PC Gamer editor Tyler Wilde praising its potential during his hands-on session back in 2025. However, despite the excitement, the game struggled to build a solid player base. In April, to attract more players, the studio made the game free to play on weekends leading up to its first update. However, just a week later, they had to pull back due to insufficient player numbers, stating that they couldn’t continue with development beyond some planned patches.

Recently, executive producer Jonathan Jelinek confirmed the unfortunate layoffs, revealing that about a dozen employees were let go. In a heartfelt statement, Mac Reynolds emphasized the hard work his team put into Last Flag and acknowledged the inherent risks of game development. “We poured everything into bringing Last Flag to life, and I’m proud of what we built together,” he said.

Looking ahead, Night Street Games is not abandoning Last Flag just yet. Reynolds assured fans that the remaining team of 13 will continue to support the game with new content over the coming months. This includes fresh characters, maps, game modes, and cosmetics. One of the most exciting features on the horizon is the ability for players to create their own lobbies with custom game rules, effectively giving gamers a greater role in shaping their playing experience.

“Putting the future of the game in the hands of our players is something we can all be proud of,” Reynolds added. After the launch of these updates, the studio plans to pivot its focus towards new game ideas with the remaining developers, promising more news soon.
