Legendary Game Developer Glen Schofield Bids Farewell to the Gaming World

Glen Schofield, the mastermind behind the iconic horror game Dead Space, has officially announced his retirement from the gaming industry. In an heartfelt video shared on LinkedIn, Schofield expressed his gratitude to fans, colleagues, and everyone who has supported him throughout his remarkable journey in gaming.

While he didn’t specify the reasons behind his decision to step back from day-to-day operations, Schofield leaves behind a legacy that spans over 35 years. He started his career as an artist before climbing the ranks to become a producer at EA, where he played key roles in developing games based on the James Bond and Lord of the Rings franchises.

One of his most significant contributions was the creation of Dead Space, which emerged as a groundbreaking title that left a lasting impact on the horror genre. Although it drew inspiration from classics like Resident Evil, Dead Space stood out with its unique, spine-chilling experience that terrified players.

After the success of Dead Space, Schofield co-founded Sledgehammer Games with his colleague Michael Condrey. The duo initially set out to develop a third-person Call of Duty game set in Vietnam but eventually played a crucial part in shaping Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 after some upheavals at Infinity Ward in 2010. Their efforts helped solidify Sledgehammer as an essential part of the Call of Duty franchise.

Continuing to push boundaries, Schofield led the development of the divisive yet innovative Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare before returning the series to its roots with Call of Duty: WWII in 2017. Later, he returned to his horror roots with The Callisto Protocol, a game inspired by his earlier work on Dead Space, which marked his final project before retirement. Despite his departure, he even made attempts to pitch a fourth installment of Dead Space to EA during the 2023 remake of the original game.

Schofield’s contributions to the gaming world extend far beyond just his impressive titles; he championed creativity and innovation throughout his career. While his presence in the industry will be deeply missed, the impact he made will resonate for years to come. Here’s to a storied legacy and an exciting future ahead for Glen Schofield!
