Long-Lost Virtual Boy Games Make a Comeback on Switch!

Nintendo fans, get ready for some nostalgia! Next week, two unreleased gems from the infamous Virtual Boy console are making their way to the Nintendo Switch. It’s hard to believe that a console with such a rocky history is still being talked about, but here we are, decades later, with some hidden treasures finally seeing the light of day.

For those who might not know, the Virtual Boy was not exactly Nintendo’s shining star. With only 22 games released in Japan and the U.S. before it fizzled out, many titles were left on the cutting room floor. However, it looks like Nintendo hasn’t completely forgotten about the quirky console, as they are bringing back its library to the Switch Online service.

This exciting announcement reveals that we’ll get to play two previously canceled games: “Zero Racers” and “D-Hopper.” It’s been a long journey for these titles. “Zero Racers” was intended to be the first 3D sequel to the classic F-Zero game from the SNES, introducing new characters like James McCloud and Jody Summer. Despite being fully developed, it never saw a release, until now!

As for “D-Hopper,” this lost title from Intelligent Systems (the studio behind Fire Emblem) was set to be a Zelda-like adventure game. It offered a unique gameplay experience where players would jump between different floors. Originally scheduled to launch in 1996, it was sadly scrapped following the Virtual Boy’s commercial struggles. Now, just shy of its 30th anniversary, it’s getting a second chance under the name “D-Hopper.”

Nintendo shared a teaser trailer on social media, confirming that both titles will be available for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members starting August 4. Who knows, by this time next week, the Virtual Boy might just be remembered for more than its failures!
