“For reference, the average wealth in week two of Season 2 is similar to what we saw in weeks 11 and 12 of Season 1. And while we did want to increase progression speeds, we didn’t land at a place that’s healthy for the game.”

Yep, you read that right! What players accumulated over almost three months in Season 1, they’re now getting in just two weeks of Season 2. Clearly, this wasn’t the plan.

Unravelling the Mystery: What’s Causing This Loot Frenzy?

Bungie has been busy investigating, and they’ve pinpointed a few culprits behind this generosity:

• Buggy Drops: There were several bugs causing “guaranteed gold drops in places that shouldn’t have them.” Thankfully, these have reportedly been squashed.
• Sponsored Kit Rush: The initial flood of Sponsored Kits at the start of the season gave a significant boost to early progression.
• Exploitable Areas: A combination of the “Sponsored Survival grind” and a particularly valuable chest in the Complex Control area allowed players to farm the game’s mostly PvE modes for massive rewards.

The Main Culprit Remains Elusive

While the above factors contributed, Bungie says there’s still a bigger, more mysterious issue at play. They’ve identified a problem that’s causing higher rarity loot to proliferate across the game at an alarming rate, but the exact source remains unknown.

The developers are scratching their heads because this specific issue wasn’t present in their internal playtests. They’re still “unravelling the source” of this loot mystery.

Bungie’s Temporary Fixes

To curb the loot explosion while they investigate, Bungie has implemented some temporary “tweaks”:

• They’ve turned off boosted containers.
• There have been nerfs to Cradle XP rates.

These are just short-term solutions, and the plan is to “reverse later in the season when we have other solutions in place.” So, don’t get too used to these changes!
