Marvel Rivals Cracks Down on Match-Throwing Amid Third-Party Bribery Scandal
NetEase, the developer behind Marvel Rivals, has introduced new measures to combat match-throwing in their popular fighting game. This move comes in response to an unusual trend where players were being bribed to intentionally lose matches, driven by a third-party website now attempting to rebrand itself as a “community transparency initiative.”
The site, Intlist, recently made waves for allowing gamers to place cash bounties on opponents. Players could earn money by deliberately losing to someone else. While this affected multiple games like Counter-Strike 2, Overwatch, and Valorant, Marvel Rivals saw enough disruption to prompt NetEase to publicly condemn the practice. On Twitter, the developers stated, “This behavior not only undermines the integrity of our game but also tarnishes the experience for honest players who are committed to fair competition.”
To address this, NetEase launched a specialized investigation protocol aimed at identifying players participating in these bribed losses. Consequences include severe punishments, such as permanent bans. The developers also expanded penalties for negative gameplay behaviors, including malicious idling (AFK) and other disruptive actions.
Following the backlash, NetEase rolled out an active server-wide detection system. This system combines big data analysis with manual review to pinpoint suspicious behavior. Additionally, a compensation mechanism ensures that players affected by match-fixing bounties automatically regain points if their defeat was caused by a teammate’s intentional sabotage.
Meanwhile, Intlist has shifted its focus, now presenting itself as a free reporting platform for match-throwing incidents. According to their site, there are no payments or bounties involved—just a space for players to share evidence of unfair gameplay. Observers suspect this pivot comes after NetEase sent a strongly worded warning.
The Marvel Rivals community is reacting with a mix of curiosity and amusement at the lengths people go to manipulate matches. While some players joke about elaborate strategies to throw games—like faking distractions or intentionally missing key attacks—NetEase’s new systems aim to make such tactics ineffective and protect the integrity of the game.
As competitive gaming evolves, NetEase’s proactive measures signal a commitment to fair play, ensuring that players can enjoy Marvel Rivals without worrying about third-party interference or bribed losses.
