Marvel’s SDCC Showdown: No X-Men Reboot Announcement in Sight
The 2026 Comic-Con has come to a close, and while we’re still buzzing from Saturday’s Marvel panel, the big news might not be as groundbreaking as we hoped. Sure, we got a brand new Ghost Rider movie featuring Ryan Gosling, and confirmation that Black Panther III is on the way, starring David Jonsson as T’Challa’s now-adult son, Toussaint. But the one announcement fans were eagerly waiting for—the X-Men reboot—was conspicuously absent.
Although insiders have confirmed that a reboot is in the works at Marvel, it wasn’t the right moment to share those details. Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier is set to bring a fresh take on the beloved mutants to the MCU, but that won’t happen until after the Multiverse Saga wraps up with Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. Right now, Marvel’s head honcho, Kevin Feige, and his team have their hands full, and promoting a film that’s still in early development simply isn’t on their priority list.
Fans were certainly hoping for more about the X-Men, especially since Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox allowed Marvel to integrate these characters into their cinematic universe. We’ve already seen cameos from Patrick Stewart as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Kelsey Grammer’s Beast in The Marvels, not to mention several original X-Men showing up in trailers for Avengers: Doomsday.
There were even a few actors from the old Fox X-Men series on stage during the panel, including Rebecca Romijn (Mystique) and James Marsden (Cyclops). Imagine the awkwardness of introducing a new X-Men lineup with the classic team right there in the spotlight! It’s a tricky situation that might have played into their decision to hold off on any big announcements.
And speaking of the X-Men, there’s buzz surrounding Sadie Sink, who is rumored to be playing Jean Grey in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, releasing Friday. While many fans are convinced she will be the new Jean, it feels a bit off for Marvel to introduce new mutants alongside their established characters in a co-production with Sony.
If Sink is indeed portraying Jean Grey, it puts Feige in a tight spot regarding spoilers. Announcing a new X-Men team just days before the release would potentially undermine all the secrecy they’ve maintained leading up to the film.
Right now, Feige’s main focus is on promoting Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to hit theaters in just five months. The MCU has faced some challenges since Avengers: Endgame, losing its leading stars and dealing with audience fatigue from an influx of new content. With so much at stake, he’s fully invested in ensuring that this next mega-movie is a massive success.
So while fans will have to wait a bit longer for news on the new X-Men, it’s clear that Feige and his team are prioritizing what’s immediately in front of them.
