Marvel’s Wolverine Previews Are Raising Some Serious Concerns

More previews of Marvel’s Wolverine are starting to appear, giving us a much better look at what Insomniac is doing with the game. Unfortunately, some of what has been shown so far has left me more concerned than excited.

One of the biggest problems appears to be just how heavily guided the gameplay is.

Footage shows the game frequently using obvious visual indicators to tell players exactly where they need to go. Instead of encouraging exploration or letting players figure things out naturally, the game seems determined to point you toward the next objective at every opportunity.

At times, it almost feels like the game doesn’t trust the player to think.

See the indicator, follow it, reach the next area and continue. If this represents the final game, it could make exploration feel more like following instructions than actually navigating the world yourself.

Quick-Time Events Don’t Look Very Punishing

Another questionable design choice is the apparent handling of quick-time events.

Some of the QTEs shown in preview footage appear to give players a very generous amount of time to react. More importantly, certain sequences can apparently be skipped entirely.

Accessibility options and difficulty settings are always welcome, but there is a difference between providing options and designing gameplay where failure barely matters.

If players can ignore or skip major interactions without meaningful consequences, these sequences risk becoming cinematic interruptions rather than actual gameplay challenges.

Logan’s Design Is Also Divisive

Then there is Wolverine himself.

The character design is going to be subjective, but this version of Logan simply doesn’t capture the Wolverine many fans may have expected. Wolverine is traditionally portrayed as rough, intimidating and battle-hardened.

The version shown here feels noticeably different.

That doesn’t automatically make it a bad interpretation, and the full game may provide much more context for Insomniac’s take on the character. Still, when you’re adapting someone as iconic as Wolverine, his appearance, attitude and presence matter.

Is Marvel’s Wolverine Being Made Too Easy?

The bigger concern isn’t one individual mechanic. It’s the overall design philosophy these previews seem to suggest.

Modern games have increasingly added navigation assistance, accessibility features, generous checkpoints and optional gameplay assists. Those features can be extremely useful when they’re optional.

The problem comes when the core experience itself feels overly guided.

Wolverine should make you feel dangerous. Combat should have weight. Exploration should reward curiosity. Difficult encounters should occasionally force you to stop, think and improve.

A Wolverine game shouldn’t feel like you’re simply following a glowing path from one cinematic sequence to another.

Maybe Wait Before Pre-Ordering

Of course, preview footage isn’t the finished product, and there is still a chance that higher difficulty settings or configurable navigation options will address some of these concerns.

But based purely on what has been shown so far, Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t looking like an automatic day-one purchase.

If you’re already unsure about the game, there is little reason to pre-order based on hype alone. Waiting for the final reviews, difficulty breakdowns and full gameplay impressions might be the smarter move.

Wolverine deserves a game that trusts players just as much as it makes them feel powerful.

Hopefully, the final release delivers exactly that.
