Maverick’s Blessing: Tom Cruise Greenlights Top Gun Footage for Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Mayday’ on Apple TV!

Hold onto your flight helmets, gamers! There’s some seriously cool movie news hitting the wires, especially for fans of high-flying action and classic cinema. The upcoming Apple TV action-comedy, ‘Mayday’, isn’t just a love letter to the iconic 80s hit ‘Top Gun’; it actually features footage from the original film – and guess who gave the green light? None other than the legendary Tom Cruise himself!

According to directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (the brains behind ‘Game Night’), getting that vintage ‘Top Gun’ clip into ‘Mayday’ was a crucial element, especially since their movie is set in 1987. “We did use a clip from Top Gun in the movie,” Goldstein revealed. “It takes place in 1987, and we needed Tom Cruise’s permission for that, and he granted it.” How awesome is that? It’s not every day a Hollywood icon personally signs off on using his classic work in a new project!

The connections don’t stop there. ‘Mayday’ shares a production company, Skydance, with ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, which explains some of the behind-the-scenes synergy. In fact, one of ‘Mayday’s editors even worked on ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, bringing their expertise in aerial cinematography to this new film. Talk about having the right people on board!

The film stars our beloved Ryan Reynolds as Lieutenant Troy ‘Assassin’ Kelly, a US Air Force Pilot with a true maverick spirit. While Kelly soon finds himself grounded and stranded deep behind enemy lines in Russia, early scenes promise some breathtaking aerial sequences. We’ll see Kelly taking to the skies in a fighter jet and even the super-sleek Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. Just like ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, the ‘Mayday’ crew went the extra mile for authenticity, capturing much of this aerial footage directly in-camera. They reportedly spent a whole month in the south of France just to nail those high-stakes flying shots!

But ‘Mayday’ isn’t just about air combat. After Kelly’s high-flying start, the story takes a turn to ground-level espionage. He’s rescued by Kenneth Branagh, who plays the bearded, America-obsessed former KGB agent Nikolai Ustinov. Kelly has no hope of getting home without Ustinov’s help, and luckily for our hero, Ustinov is prepared to betray his own country to get an all-American top gun out of Soviet Russia. Get ready for a thrilling mix of action, comedy, and espionage!

Mark your calendars, because this Tom Cruise-approved adventure, ‘Mayday’, is set to land exclusively on Apple TV on September 4th. Get ready for a new film that’s clearly made with a lot of respect for cinematic history and a heavy dose of modern action!
