Morrowind Gets a Fresh Spin with New Sekiro-Inspired Mod

The Elder Scrolls series has always been known for its expansive worlds, but when it comes to combat, let’s just say it’s a mixed bag. The 2002 classic, Morrowind, is often seen as one of the weaker links in the chain. Luckily, a new mod for the OpenMW source port is here to breathe some life into this old gem. This fantastic mod introduces a Sekiro-style perfect block parry system and rebalances Morrowind’s infamous hit mechanics, making the experience much more enjoyable.

Crafted by MrArrean, this mod, dubbed N’Garde, asks a fun question: “What if Bethesda had a bit more time to polish Morrowind?” The goal here is to ramp up the challenge and rewards in melee combat. With N’Garde, players can master a perfect block that, if timed right, allows you to take zero damage while also staggering your opponent. But even if you miss that window, you’ll at least score an imperfect block—much kinder than the slow shield swings from Dark Souls.

This mod is impressively modular and lightweight, seamlessly integrating with the standard OpenMW and a list of 15 tested mods, including some animation enhancements. One of the coolest aspects is how thoughtfully it fits into Morrowind’s original systems. As you level up your block skill, both your perfect block timing and imperfect block effectiveness improve. So if you’re blocking with a weapon instead of a shield, your proficiency with that particular weapon type—like long blades or blunt weapons—will also factor into how effective your blocks are.

MrArrean has even tweaked the timing and effectiveness of the parry based on weapon types. Heavier weapons are naturally more powerful, while shields still reign supreme. Best of all, N’Garde works harmoniously with Morrowind’s original, somewhat frustrating hit chance system. It also introduces an intriguing alternative through “Glancing Blows,” which provides a middle ground between misses and full hits. If you miss an attack, it can still deal up to 20% of the damage without granting skill XP, keeping combat engaging without abandoning the original mechanics.

This balance means that even if you’re not landing perfect hits, you still get some feedback, making the combat feel more dynamic and exciting. It’s a clever fix for a frequently cited drawback of Morrowind’s combat—where swinging at an enemy often felt like hitting air. The game might be more action-oriented than its predecessors, but its behind-the-scenes mechanics have a D&D vibe that can lead to some frustrating moments.

So, if you’ve ever been put off by Morrowind’s melee mechanics, this mod might just change your mind. N’Garde could elevate the combat experience to levels that even surpass its successors, Oblivion and Skyrim. And while those games are beloved, their melee systems can feel a bit stale—resulting in a lot of hit-trading without finesse. With this mod in place, the next time you explore the beautiful landscapes of Vvardenfell, you’ll want to give N’Garde a try, especially if you’ve been hesitant to dive into modding Bethesda’s creations.
