Nintendo Teases Potential DS and 3DS Games for Switch 2

Nintendo’s big boss, Shuntaro Furukawa, recently had a little chat about the future of classic games on the Switch, particularly the beloved DS and 3DS titles. And guess what? He didn’t outright dismiss the idea, which is music to the ears of nostalgic gamers!

Since its launch, Nintendo Switch Online has been a fantastic addition to the console, slowly but surely expanding its library. Unlike the Virtual Console on the Wii that dropped a whole bunch of games at once, the Switch has been more strategic, adding titles gradually since 2018. There have been hiccups, like 2021 and 2023 where two consoles were introduced at once to catch up, but overall, it’s been a pretty solid ride.

However, as we look ahead, the question of bringing over games from the DS and 3DS arises. Nintendo’s older consoles have unique features—like touch controls and dual screens—that could complicate their transition to the Switch. Furukawa was asked directly if we might see DS and 3DS titles on the new hardware, and while he couldn’t dive into specifics, he did hint that Nintendo is committed to making as many classic games available on modern systems as possible. He mentioned that the Switch Online service is a perfect way for gamers to rediscover those gems and relive those fond memories.

Though integrating DS and 3DS games might pose challenges, it seems more plausible than trying to adapt the Wii or Wii U titles for Switch Online. Especially when you consider that Nintendo is already re-releasing popular Wii titles like Mario Galaxy as standalone purchases. Wouldn’t it be awesome to see a collaboration between Nintendo and Sega to resurrect some Sega Saturn and Dreamcast classics for Switch 2? Now, that’s a dream worth dreaming!

As Nintendo continues to explore options, there’s plenty of excitement in the air about what the future might hold for retro gaming on the Switch. Stay tuned for more updates as we keep our eyes peeled for classic games making a comeback!
