One Of The Most Overlooked RPG Franchises Deserves A Comeback Now That It’s Finally On PC Again

For RPG fans, the thrill of exploring expansive worlds, engaging in deep character development, and making impactful choices is what makes the genre so memorable. However, there’s one RPG franchise that’s been consistently overlooked, despite its rich history and innovative gameplay. With its return to PC after years of being exclusive to consoles, now is the perfect time for “The Legacy of Kain” to make its long-awaited comeback. Let’s dive into why this underrated gem deserves the spotlight and what could make its revival something truly special.

The Legacy of Kain: A Brief Overview

For those who may not be familiar, The Legacy of Kain series is a dark and atmospheric action RPG franchise developed by Crystal Dynamics. The series began in 1996 with the release of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain on PlayStation, and it quickly captured the attention of RPG fans thanks to its engaging narrative, unique characters, and deep lore. The franchise revolves around Kain, a tragic anti-hero, and Raziel, his fallen lieutenant, in a world filled with morally gray characters, high-stakes betrayal, and supernatural power struggles.

The core of the franchise’s appeal lies in its narrative depth—the intertwining destinies of Kain and Raziel, set against a backdrop of a dying world called Nosgoth. This world, filled with vampires, ancient prophecies, and twisted plots, was brought to life by rich voice acting, innovative gameplay mechanics, and a story that delved into themes of fate, power, and redemption.

Why Legacy of Kain Needs a Comeback

1. Deep, Intricate Storytelling

One of the standout aspects of The Legacy of Kain series has always been its narrative complexity. The story, which spans multiple games, unfolds like a dark epic, full of betrayal, philosophical dilemmas, and fascinating character arcs. Soul Reaver 2 and Legacy of Kain: Defiance—the most critically acclaimed entries—are still lauded for their ability to mix action with thought-provoking storytelling. With the current wave of narrative-driven RPGs like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, there’s a real demand for stories that challenge players and make them question their moral decisions. The Legacy of Kain franchise could easily find a place in the modern RPG landscape with its rich lore and complex characters.

2. A World Ready for Expansion

Nosgoth, the world in which the series is set, is brimming with untapped potential. While the original games explored a fraction of the world’s vast history, there’s still so much more to delve into. The lore of Nosgoth spans multiple eras, with hints at ancient wars, lost civilizations, and divine entities. It’s a world full of mystery and intrigue, and its potential for new stories and adventures is boundless. The revival of Legacy of Kain could serve as a platform for deep exploration of this universe, even expanding into other media like comics, novels, or even an animated series. There’s a growing interest in expansive, interconnected fictional universes, and Nosgoth is rich with storytelling opportunities.

3. The Return to PC

For years, The Legacy of Kain series was primarily available on older consoles, with only select titles appearing on PC. However, 2025 marks the return of the franchise to PC, with Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2 finally being made available through digital platforms like Steam and GOG. This re-release is a monumental moment for fans who were left with the hope that a new entry might eventually follow. With the games now accessible to a wider audience, it’s the perfect time for the developers to see just how strong the fanbase still is and capitalize on the opportunity to bring the series back to life.

4. The Gap in the Market

Despite being overshadowed by more popular franchises like The Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Age, Legacy of Kain fills a unique niche that has yet to be fully embraced by modern RPGs: a dark, mature, and narrative-heavy experience. While other games may lean into either fantasy or science fiction, the Legacy of Kain series straddles both, offering a gothic atmosphere with themes of vampires, revenge, and betrayal, all set against the backdrop of a crumbling world. As fans yearn for more mature, morally gray RPGs, Legacy of Kain could fill that void perfectly.

What Could a Modern Legacy of Kain Look Like?

1. A Remake or Remaster of the Originals

While the classic titles hold up remarkably well, their age is still evident, especially in terms of controls, graphics, and overall polish. A remake or remaster could introduce these games to a new generation of players, giving them the same narrative depth and world-building that captivated players in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, but with modern graphics, updated controls, and enhanced voice acting. Imagine revisiting Kain’s journey in Blood Omen or Raziel’s tragic arc in Soul Reaver with the visuals and mechanics of modern-day games.

2. A New Entry with Updated Gameplay

While a remaster would undoubtedly appeal to longtime fans, the true potential for Legacy of Kain lies in a new entry that takes the franchise forward with fresh mechanics. A new game could build on the foundations of the old titles, combining the original’s action-oriented combat with more modern RPG systems, such as open-world exploration and real-time choices that impact the narrative. Given the advances in AI and procedural generation, the world of Nosgoth could come to life in ways never before imagined, offering players a chance to shape the world and characters through their actions.

3. A Focus on Story-Driven, Choice-Based Gameplay

With many RPGs today offering players the freedom to shape the narrative through their choices, Legacy of Kain could take full advantage of this trend, offering multiple story paths, branching dialogues, and consequences that carry weight throughout the game. Would you choose to embrace Kain’s dark destiny, or would you rebel against fate itself? The series’ focus on destiny and choice provides a perfect foundation for this type of gameplay, and it could be an exciting way to reimagine the franchise.

4. Multiplayer and Co-Op Elements

While the Legacy of Kain series is known for its single-player experiences, there’s potential for a multiplayer or co-op mode to enhance the gameplay. Picture teaming up with friends to explore Nosgoth’s dark corners, fighting enemies together, and tackling complex dungeons in a cooperative setting. The rich lore and interesting characters could easily be expanded into multiplayer factions, where players align themselves with different vampire clans or factions, each with unique abilities and stories.

The Time for a Comeback is Now

With Legacy of Kain returning to PC, the window of opportunity for a comeback is wide open. The world of Nosgoth is just waiting to be explored once more, and with the increased interest in narrative-heavy, atmospheric RPGs, it’s the perfect time for Crystal Dynamics to revisit this fan-favorite franchise.

Whether through remakes, new entries, or even a multimedia expansion, the Legacy of Kain series deserves to be resurrected for both veteran fans and newcomers alike. The legacy of Kain and Raziel should not be confined to the past—it’s time for this dark, compelling franchise to rise again.
