PC Gaming Revenue: More Than Half Comes from Hidden Gems!
According to a recent report from Newzoo focusing on PC and console gaming for 2026, it seems like the gaming landscape is evolving, especially on PC. The findings reveal a fascinating trend: an increasing chunk of gaming revenue, specifically over 50%, is now being generated by titles that don’t make it to the prestigious top 20 list.
The report highlights that in Western markets, the games ranked beyond the top 20 have seen their share grow from 48% to an impressive 56% in 2025. That means more players are diving into lesser-known titles and sticking with them for longer, with playtime for these games jumping by 44%. In contrast, total playtime for PC gaming overall rose by 14%, while the playtime for the top 20 stayed pretty much the same or even dipped slightly.
Among the games reaping the benefits of this shift are favorites like Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, and Skyrim, which continue to captivate gamers. Survival games and action RPGs are also riding this wave, with titles like Rust, DayZ, and Path of Exile 2 keeping players engaged through ongoing updates and continuous content support.
When it comes to PlayStation, the older games still have a solid footing, particularly the exclusive hits like God of War Ragnarök, Ghost of Tsushima, and Spider-Man 2, which compete fiercely with the annual sports titles that dominate player time. Meanwhile, Xbox has established itself as the go-to platform for Game Pass subscribers, where playtime largely revolves around the availability of games on the service. Interestingly, new free-to-play games only account for less than 1% of playtime on Xbox, likely because they’re often seen as distractions from the Game Pass library players have already invested in.
Reflecting back to when Chris Anderson introduced the concept of the “long tail” over two decades ago, he pointed out that PC gaming was perfectly positioned to thrive under this model. The nostalgia factor is also hard at play, as retro gaming and simulators of classic consoles are witnessing a resurgence among the first generation of gamers.
Even though some games like Skyrim and DayZ have been around for a while, many recent titles are still holding their ground in the market. Newzoo mentions games like REPO and Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, which continue to sell well despite not being chart-toppers anymore. It seems there’s a significant audience out there waiting for the right moment to snag these games, particularly during sales or when their schedules clear up.
As Tianyi Gu from Newzoo put it, “On PC, the space below the Top 20 is becoming more economically meaningful.” So, while the market isn’t exactly losing focus on the big players, the relevance of those hidden gems is definitely growing. It’s an exciting time to be a PC gamer, with so many more options to explore!
