Pirate Games Rule the Waves as Windrose Surpasses Pragmata on Steam
This week, the gaming scene on Steam has been quite the spectacle, with Windrose sailing ahead of the competition and overshadowing the highly anticipated release of Pragmata. Initially, it seemed like Pragmata, Capcom’s new sci-fi shooter, was set to dominate the charts. However, an unexpected twist came when Windrose launched into early access on April 14, catching everyone off guard after its surprise announcement just a week prior.
Windrose has made waves, quickly climbing to become the second-best-selling game on Steam, right behind Counter-Strike 2. In just six days, it sold a whopping one million copies and recorded over 220,000 players online at peak times. To put that into perspective, that’s significantly more than Marathon’s best ever peak of 88,337 players. Clearly, PC gamers are craving a solid pirate experience over a new extraction shooter from Bungie.
Here’s a quick look at the current top five games on Steam by revenue:
- 1. Counter-Strike 2
- 2. Windrose
- 3. Pragmata
- 4. Mouse: P.I. For Hire
- 5. PUBG: Battlegrounds
It’s no shocker that Windrose has captured the hearts of so many players. The allure of pirate-themed games is undeniable, although recent titles in the genre have received mixed reviews. While games like Sea of Thieves have polarized audiences, and Skull & Bones has frustrated many, there’s a buzz around the upcoming Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake that’s expected to perform exceptionally well.
What’s particularly intriguing is seeing Windrose attract more players than Pragmata, despite the latter being available on PS5 and Xbox as well. The player counts tell a compelling story: Windrose’s peak concurrent player count reached an impressive 222,134, while Pragmata peaked at 68,689, all while Windrose is still in early access on PC.
Just to clarify, this is not to suggest that Pragmata is a failure; many early indicators suggest it’s off to a healthy start. However, it does highlight the massive appeal of Windrose in the current gaming landscape.
In other news, the pre-orders for Forza Horizon 6 are cruising along smoothly, with over 500,000 units already sold. Road to Vostok, an indie title from Poland, also made a splash, ranking as the 12th best-selling game on Steam from April 7 to 14, although it has slipped to 43rd place now.
Among other recent releases, we saw some intriguing indie titles pop up on Steam:
- Before Fate (April 14) – A time-traveling survival adventure with a unique art style that transports players through various worlds.
- Scriptorium: Master of Manuscripts (April 17) – A cozy game that allows players to illustrate medieval manuscripts in a sandbox mode, perfect for creative minds.
- Worthy or Not (April 18) – An FMV dating sim from China that offers a fresh take on matchmaking with its engaging narrative.
- ZPF (April 17) – A horizontal shmup originally designed for Sega Mega Drive, now available for modern gamers on Steam.
And let’s not forget the highlight from the Steam user reviews: “This is my Chair. There are many like it, but this one is mine.” – ItzBothNet on Office Chair Curling. It seems even the simplest experiences can spark some memorable moments in gaming!
