PlayStation’s Digital Leap: Is the End Near for Physical Games and Pakistan’s Used Market?

Remember the thrill of unwrapping a new game disc, or the hunt for a great deal on a used title at your local shop? For many Pakistani gamers, physical games and the thriving second-hand market are a huge part of our gaming culture. But what if that era is rapidly coming to an end?

Whispers from industry analysts suggest a massive shift is on the horizon: PlayStation might be planning to completely abandon physical game discs as early as 2028. This isn’t just a minor change; it could fundamentally reshape how we buy, play, and even sell our games, potentially leaving a huge void in the gaming landscape.

According to market experts, the global used games market is a colossal industry, projected to be worth a staggering $7.2 (approx. Rs 2,000) billion by 2025 – and it was expected to nearly double to $13.8 (approx. Rs 3,840) billion by 2034. That’s a lot of value, a lot of trade, and a lot of affordable gaming for players worldwide, especially in markets like ours where budget-friendly options are crucial.

However, if PlayStation stops producing discs, this massive market could shrink dramatically. Imagine your favorite local game store – the one where you trade in old games for new ones – struggling to find stock. It’s a serious concern for retailers and consumers alike, as fewer physical games mean fewer opportunities for these vital exchanges.

Industry insiders aren’t mincing words. Michael Pachter, a prominent analyst, believes that “brick and mortar game retail is doomed” if this transition happens. He points out that a significant portion – at least one-third – of all game sales are actually used copies. These sales, surprisingly, often fuel the purchase of new games down the line. Think about it: you sell an old game, get some cash, and put it towards a new release. Fewer discs mean fewer opportunities for this cycle, potentially hitting new game sales too.

Another analyst, Kazunori Ito, predicts that the secondhand games market will “keep shrinking and eventually disappear” once Sony fully embraces the digital-only model. We’ve already seen this trend dominate PC gaming, with platforms like Steam and Epic Games Store making physical PC releases a rarity. While Xbox hasn’t officially ditched discs entirely, they’re clearly moving in that direction, even experimenting with features to digitize entire disc collections. It seems the console world is slowly but surely heading towards a future where game cases might become relics.

Ito highlights a crucial point: there’s a big difference between players choosing to go digital because they see value in it, and having that choice taken away by removing the alternative. Many gamers prefer physical copies for collection, resale value, or simply not being tied to a digital storefront. If PlayStation goes fully digital, it’s not just the used games market that takes a hit. It impacts brick-and-mortar stores, limits consumer choice, and changes the very nature of game ownership.

For us gamers in Pakistan, where every rupee counts, losing the option for affordable used games could be a tough pill to swallow. It truly seems like a move that could negatively affect everyone in the gaming community, regardless of how you prefer to buy your games.
