Most players in PoE 2 stick to a modest crew of 10-15 skeletons if they’re running a minion build. But Empyriangaming and his squad had a much more ambitious vision: summon an absolute army of 2,000 skeletons. Yes, you read that right – two thousand! To pull this off, they invested an insane amount of in-game currency, acquiring gear sets that probably cost more than many players earn in hundreds of hours. We’re talking about optimizing builds to reduce the resource cost of each minion to single digits, while stacking up as much of that resource as possible.
Initially, they hit a snag: the game caps individual players at 255 minions of any single type before it starts deleting them. But true legends don’t back down easily. The solution? Teamwork! Empyriangaming rallied his friends, and together, they devised a plan. They ventured into PoE 2’s roguelike Trial of the Sekhemas mode, which offers powerful temporary buffs. Crucially, one of these buffs doubles the number of minions each player can summon. This was their golden ticket to total skeletal mayhem!
The moment they started summoning, the game went from a fluid action RPG to a stop-motion nightmare. Empyriangaming described it as watching a slideshow, with the frame rate dropping so low that even simple dodge rolls took an agonizing minute to register. Imagine trying to move five feet and having to wait several minutes for the action to complete on screen! The game became utterly unplayable, but the goal wasn’t to play – it was to break it, and they succeeded spectacularly.

What they actually got was an immediate, terrifying plunge into a hideout filled with thousands of lag-inducing skeletons! “Wtf is this?” one player reportedly typed in chat as they entered the skeletal abyss, only to be hit with an instant, crushing frame rate drop. Many players joined, saw the chaos, and immediately left. Though one lucky (or perhaps unlucky, depending on how you see it) player did manage to snag the item and escape the skeletal horde before the game completely froze. While they might have gotten a great deal, one has to wonder if the haunting memory of loading into a hideout with more skeletons than Hades itself will stay with them far longer than the item they acquired.
Path of Exile 2 might not be categorized as a horror game on Steam, but after Empyriangaming’s legendary experiment, perhaps it should consider adding that tag!
