Quake Celebrates 30 Years with a Major Update Amid Challenges for id Software

It’s hard to believe that it’s been over 30 years since Quake first hit the scene, and to celebrate, the game has just received a significant update! The talented folks at MachineGames have introduced a new chapter called “Dawn of the Machine,” which adds 19 fresh levels to the iconic 1996 title, originally crafted by id Software.

In this latest addition, players will find the protagonist trapped in a mind-bending “dimension of endless illusion.” One of the most exciting aspects of this update is the introduction of new weapon variants. Get ready to wield the “Super Axe,” capable of unleashing electrifying attacks with every strike, and the “Laser Cannon,” which fires ricochet projectiles that shred through foes from all directions.

Additionally, this update offers a fascinating look back at the game’s development with a gallery of archival materials. Players can explore some unfinished levels that were created during the early stages of development, complete with quirky names like “Tim,” “Tim10A,” and “Tim14.” The notes from these levels reveal a relatable creative process, mentioning tight hallways and dead ends that leave players wondering what the original vision was.

The announcement was made during a lively panel at QuakeCon, featuring id Software co-founder John Romero. He humorously pointed out that they were celebrating not just the game’s 30th anniversary, which officially took place in June, but also marking the day he left the studio. Quake was a significant turning point for id Software, with Romero and several others departing the company post-development, leading to Petersen’s infamous remark that “Quake ruined id Software.”

Despite the controversies, id Software has continued to thrive, delivering classics like Quake 2 and Quake 3, along with the beloved modern Doom series. However, the studio is currently facing new hurdles, including recent layoffs announced by Microsoft as part of their efforts to “reset” the Xbox division. John Carmack, another co-founder, expressed concern that this news would cast a shadow on the upcoming reunion at QuakeCon.

Fans can look forward to a special panel featuring Romero, Carmack, Adrian Carmack, and Tom Hall, who will discuss the early days of id Software and share insights on the friendships, challenges, and innovations that have shaped the gaming landscape as we know it today.
