Riot Reconsiders Paid Skins in League of Legends Classic After Player Outcry
Riot Games has recently rolled out League of Legends Classic, a fresh mode that brings back nostalgia by trimming down the character roster and reintroducing older builds and kits from 2013 and earlier. However, the launch hasn’t gone entirely smoothly, sparking mixed reactions from the community.
Initially, when the new mode hit the public test environment, players were greeted with modern character models and effects by default. To access the “classic skins,” players had to either earn tokens or fork out real cash. This raised quite a few eyebrows, especially with a popular post on the League of Legends subreddit criticizing the move as “League ‘not so’ Classic.” The sentiment echoed by many was that charging for classic skins was quite outrageous.
Responding to the backlash, Riot’s Brian “FeralPony” Feeney took to a video blog just a few days later to acknowledge the concerns. He announced that after taking player feedback into consideration, all classic skins would be available for every champion that had one. This means players can now enjoy the old-school aesthetics as the default appearance, replacing the modern looks.
In his update, FeralPony also addressed the mode’s unique blend of various patches instead of sticking to a single one. Player responses were varied, with many believing that League was at its peak during their own introduction to the game. Riot decided to cast a wide net and cater to these diverse perspectives, ensuring players can vote on new patches once the mode goes live on standard servers.
Moreover, some of the other developers voiced their commitment to enhancing the mode further, promising that the default appearance will lean even more towards a retro feel. Senior VFX artist Sirhaian humorously noted how it felt to reverse years of work to accommodate players’ nostalgia.
All in all, it seems Riot is listening to its community and is keen on making League of Legends Classic a more enjoyable experience for everyone. Fans of the old-school vibe can rest easy knowing that they will get the classic looks they cherished without having to dig into their wallets.
