Rockstar Faces Legal Blow as Tribunal Supports Fired Workers’ Union Claims

Rockstar is hitting some serious turbulence on the legal front as a tribunal in the UK has allowed claims from its recently fired employees to move forward. This case revolves around the firing of 31 workers in October 2025, all of whom were union members fighting for better rights in the workplace.

In a recent preliminary hearing, Rockstar tried to limit the trial by asking for certain allegations—specifically those relating to blacklisting—to be dismissed. However, the tribunal decided to uphold the rights of the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB) to fully present their claims of Rockstar’s alleged discriminatory practices. This means that all accusations of union-busting actions taken by Rockstar will be on the table when the trial kicks off.

Mark your calendars! The final trial is set to run from September 10 to October 15, just a month shy of the highly anticipated launch of GTA 6. Talk about timing!

Ellie Dunstan, one of the former employees who were let go, expressed her thoughts on this ruling, calling it “a huge moment.” She emphasized that Rockstar can’t just control the narrative and is eager to have their case fully heard in court.

This legal drama unfolded soon after Rockstar’s abrupt mass layoffs, where over 30 employees were dismissed in both the UK and Canada. Most of these individuals were either union members or actively seeking to organize within the company. As news spread, protests organized by the IWGB erupted outside Rockstar and Take-Two offices in London and Edinburgh, demanding justice.

Support for the fired workers has been growing, even reaching Parliament. Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine called on fellow Ministers to back those who have lost their jobs and prevent similar situations in the future. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has also labeled this case as “deeply concerning.”

Spring McParlin-Jones, Chair of the IWGB Game Workers Branch, remarked that this tribunal ruling is a significant setback for Rockstar’s attempts to escape accountability. She noted that from the moment the employees were escorted out of their workplaces, the pressure has been on, and this ruling strengthens their case as they gear up for the final showdown. This legal battle isn’t just about these workers; it could have far-reaching implications for union rights in the gaming industry and beyond.
