Rust 2 Rumors Explode After Mysterious Steam Page Appears—But Is It Real?

It’s been a long time since Rust first made its debut. While the survival hit officially launched on Steam eight years ago, its early access version dates all the way back to 2013. In gaming terms, that’s practically ancient history—long enough that most franchises would have already produced multiple sequels. Yet until now, there’s been no official sign of Rust 2.

That may be starting to change—at least, that’s what fans are beginning to wonder.

A Strange Steam Page Sparks Speculation

The conversation kicked off with a simple but loud Reddit post titled “RUST 2 IS REAL?!” The post itself didn’t say much, but it included a screenshot of what appeared to be a rough, unfinished Steam page for a sequel. Interestingly, the listing wasn’t entirely fake—you can actually find traces of it online.

However, things quickly became less clear.

On SteamDB, the listing has been flagged as suspicious. A warning suggests the page could be misleading, potentially impersonating a real product or even posing a security risk. That alone is enough to make anyone think twice before taking it seriously.

Adding to the skepticism, the Reddit account that originally shared the image was created just minutes before the post went live—hardly a reassuring detail.

Facepunch Adds Fuel to the Fire

Just when it seemed like the rumor might fizzle out, Alistair McFarlane stepped in with a cryptic response: “You saw nothing.”

That single line was enough to reignite speculation. Was it a joke? A subtle confirmation? Or just trolling?

Later, McFarlane doubled down on the ambiguity, suggesting he sometimes enjoys stirring confusion in the community. His comments left fans even more uncertain, with many now questioning whether the leak was staged or entirely coincidental.

Rust 2 Might Not Be a Myth After All

While the current situation is murky, the idea of Rust 2 isn’t completely out of nowhere. Back in 2023, Garry Newman—the founder of Facepunch Studios—mentioned the sequel in passing. He notably stated that if it does happen, it won’t be built using the Unity engine.

That alone confirms one thing: a sequel has at least been discussed internally.

It’s also worth noting that Facepunch has a history of revealing major updates in unconventional ways. Instead of flashy announcements, the studio sometimes drops hints through subtle changes—like quietly updating backend pages or slipping in unexpected details where only dedicated fans will notice.

Given that pattern, the appearance of a half-finished Steam page doesn’t seem entirely impossible as a teaser tactic.

So, Is Rust 2 Real?

At this point, there’s no definitive answer.

On one hand, the suspicious listing and questionable source raise red flags. On the other, past comments from developers and Facepunch’s playful behavior keep the possibility alive.

For now, fans are left in a familiar position: waiting, speculating, and refreshing pages—hoping that something more concrete emerges.

Until then, the mystery of Rust 2 continues.
