Slay the Spire 2: No Deadlines, Just Quality!
Slay the Spire 2 has been making waves on Steam since its launch in March, and it’s proving to be a big hit! Even in its early access phase, this sequel is already outshining the original in both popularity and content. However, the game is still a work in progress, with a ton of exciting features on the horizon as revealed in the latest update from Mega Crit.
What can players expect? Well, get ready for alternate versions of Acts 2 and 3 (Act 1 already boasts two forms: Overgrowth and Underdocks), support for Steam Workshop, experimental game modes, a brand-new character, and a treasure trove of new cards, events, relics, and potions. And let’s not forget the promise of “true victory” coming down the line, along with a host of bug fixes, audio refinements, balance adjustments, and additional languages.
However, there’s one thing that’s notably absent from this roadmap: specific release dates. Mega Crit’s co-founder, Casey Yano, has openly stated that deadlines aren’t their thing. He explains, “You might be wondering, where are the dates? Why no promises?” Yano emphasizes that a laid-back approach works better for their small team, which fosters a healthy work environment where tasks are evaluated weekly based on their impact, rather than rigid deadlines.
Yano even mentions that this method allows for playful experimentation, leading to fun elements like quirky dialogues and even a “Room Full of Cheese.” “We’re not about to expand the studio just to speed things up. Strict deadlines often lead to rushed, uninspired work, and I don’t want Sloppy Spire 2. I want a polished Slay the Spire 2,” he insists.
For those eager to dive into the action sooner, players can join the game’s beta branch to experience experimental changes early and share their feedback. Yano notes that many players have already chimed in following some recent balance adjustments. As for when those beta changes will roll into the main game, that will depend on how stable they feel once tested.
In a recent Q&A, Yano also highlighted one non-negotiable aspect of Slay the Spire 2: “There must be whimsy.” There you have it, folks! Quality and creativity are at the forefront of their development process. So while we wait for the full release, let’s keep our fingers crossed for a delightful gaming experience!
