Sony’s Retreat from PC Gaming: What This Means for Players
Sony has recently made waves by changing its approach to bringing single-player PlayStation titles to the PC platform. This unexpected pivot has sparked a lot of discussion among gamers. The head of technology at Bluepoint Games hinted that Sony might be more concerned about competition from Valve than from Xbox. Meanwhile, our own Morgan Park humorously pointed out that this move could deprive us of just a handful of decent titles.
Alinea Insights has taken a closer look at the sales data for PlayStation games, particularly highlighting the importance of the PC market. One striking finding is that a whopping 42% of Death Stranding 2’s sales on PC came from China, marking it as the game’s largest market on Steam. They also noted that Stellar Blade is performing well in China, indicating a strong interest in these titles.
According to Steam’s latest hardware survey, about 39.48% of users prefer English, while 21.85% use Simplified Chinese, which makes it the second-most spoken language on the platform. This demographic could represent over 30 million potential players, a significant audience that Sony seems ready to overlook in favor of getting gamers to purchase a PS5 for exclusive titles like Wolverine.
Interestingly, Shift Up, the studio behind Stellar Blade, announced that it won’t be releasing its sequel with Sony. They mentioned in a recent earnings Q&A that they aim to develop a marketing strategy that maximizes their reach to a global audience from the get-go. It’s safe to say that they are eyeing the Chinese market specifically.
Alinea’s analysis also revealed that releasing games on PC hasn’t negatively impacted sales on PlayStation. In fact, Death Stranding 2 saw its best sales period on Sony’s platform after its PC launch. This was particularly notable since the game was on sale during this time, but similar discounts had previously not yielded such strong results. Stellar Blade, which didn’t have a discount when it launched on PC, also experienced a boost in PS5 sales simultaneously.
Launching games on PC can significantly enhance visibility and encourage discussions online, which is a fantastic way to promote sales, regardless of the language. Sony’s strategy shift could have some major implications for gamers everywhere, especially in key markets like China.
