Squadron 42 Nearing Completion, But More Delays Could Be on the Horizon
Big news for all the Star Citizen fans out there! Last week, the game hit a massive milestone, raking in over $1 (approx. Rs 280) billion in player funding. This achievement has sparked a flurry of questions about Cloud Imperium Games’ ambitious space MMO. Many are wondering if it’s a scam (definitely not), whether it’s playable (for sure), and the burning question—when will it finally be finished? As for its single-player mode, Squadron 42, the latest updates are a mixed bag.
Initially, the buzz was that Squadron 42 was set to launch sometime this year. However, given its history of delays and the vague release window, it’s hard to take that announcement at face value. But here’s a glimmer of hope: Chris Roberts, the brain behind Star Citizen, recently mentioned that the single-player game is now “in the closing stages” of its development.
During a chat with Variety at Star Citizen’s recent DefenseCon event, Roberts shed some light on where things stand with Squadron 42. He emphasized that the game is designed as a cinematic experience, where players find themselves in the center of a blockbuster-like narrative. “You’re the star of this huge blockbuster event movie,” he described, highlighting the seamless blend of storytelling and player control in a first-person perspective. “It feels pretty epic. I’m really excited about how it’s all coming together,” he added.
Roberts also hinted that the marketing efforts for Squadron 42 are ramping up, which means we can expect some promotional content soon. However, he acknowledged that with the game nearing its launch—at least in game dev terms—keeping things under wraps is becoming increasingly challenging.
So, while it sounds like we might be hearing more about Squadron 42 soon, a shadow of doubt hangs over the excitement. Following Roberts’ remarks, rumors have swirled suggesting that the upcoming announcements could involve yet another delay rather than a release date. These whispers mainly stem from TheAstroPub, a YouTuber who specializes in all things Star Citizen. He claims to have spoken with several anonymous developers, who provided him with updates about the game’s progress.
According to TheAstroPub, as of early 2026, Squadron 42 had entered “some sort of beta” testing phase. However, recent conversations with his sources raised concerns about potential performance issues leading up to the launch. When asked if an October release date could fix these problems, the response was surprising: “It’s not October, it’s 2027.” They even hinted at a specific date, which TheAstroPub chose to keep under wraps to protect his sources.
In addition, there’s buzz that Squadron 42 might make a splash at this year’s Summer Games Fest. This speculation comes from a cryptic message on a Spanish Twitch stream allegedly from a senior game designer at Star Citizen, suggesting they wouldn’t miss the event. Given the hype, it’s plausible that a major showcase could happen, especially since Roberts is openly discussing marketing efforts for the game.
While fans are hopeful for a release date announcement, if history has taught us anything, it’s that delays are often part of the journey. So, whether we get a launch date or another delay, it seems like Squadron 42’s saga continues!
