If you’ve ever wondered what all the hype – and the multi-million dollar crowdfunding – is about, now’s your chance to experience it firsthand. You can explore its vast, evolving alpha universe completely free until Wednesday, May 27th.
This special free-play period is part of Star Citizen’s annual DefenseCon event, an in-game virtual military convention. It’s the perfect opportunity for both new and existing players to test-drive some of the biggest and most impressive ships in Star Citizen’s massive fleet. Imagine flying around in a spacecraft that normally costs a hefty sum, all for free! This lets us ‘regular Joes’ get a taste of the high-roller life and see what kind of adventures await in the Star Citizen galaxy.
Getting started is super easy. All you need to do is create an account and download the game launcher. Once you’re in, the DefenseCon event is happening at the Bevic Convention Center in the bustling city of Area18. New players will even get a loaner Aurora Mark 2 ship to get them flying, so you can easily make your way to the event. Alternatively, you can just spawn directly in Area18 and hop on a shuttle (yes, this game even has virtual public transport!) to the convention center. There are apparently 100 different ships available to try, with each one loanable for a generous 48 hours!
This free week also comes right after a huge update to Star Citizen that included an extensive game wipe. This was mainly done to fix issues with players exploiting the game’s economy, but it’s fantastic news for newcomers! It means you’ll be stepping into a relatively fresh and balanced universe, giving everyone a clean slate. The update also brought a bunch of new mission types, including cool refuelling missions you might get to try, and high-level Tactical Strike Group missions (which might be a bit too advanced for your first few days, but hey, aim for the stars!).
Star Citizen is available to play for free right now until May 27th. This sci-fi epic, spearheaded by Chris Roberts, is rapidly closing in on a mind-boggling $1 billion in crowdfunding! Yes, you read that right – almost a billion dollars! If its current trajectory continues, it’s only a matter of weeks until it crosses that incredible threshold. While the full game is still a long way off (don’t expect it before 2028 at the earliest), its single-player component, Squadron 42, is still theoretically slated for launch sometime this year.
