Surprising Survey: Majority of Steam Gamers Don’t Mind AI in Games
In a landscape where many gamers appear to be standing firm against the rise of artificial intelligence in gaming, recent survey results might just flip that notion on its head. A fresh survey involving around 3,800 Steam gamers has shown that a significant chunk of them are actually quite chill with AI being integrated into video games.
The findings from this survey revealed some eye-opening stats. A notable 23.4% of respondents had “absolutely no problem” with AI, which is a surprising number considering the ongoing debates within the community. Another 19.6% mentioned they were simply “fine with it.” The biggest group, making up 25.6%, claimed they were “neutral” on the subject. Interestingly, 23.3% weren’t really fans but still open to it, while only a small 8.1% stated they would avoid any game featuring AI altogether.
One bright spot is that Valve—Steam’s parent company—requires developers to disclose whether AI was used in their games and to what extent. This means that gamers, regardless of their stance on AI, can make informed decisions before hitting that purchase button. However, for game developers looking to incorporate AI into their projects, this survey sends a clear message: while acceptance is there, players are watching closely.
In another part of the survey, 44.4% of players indicated they “check in detail” to see if AI was involved in a game’s development, and 44.7% said they’ll take a quick glance but not dive deep into it. Only 10.9% admitted they wouldn’t bother checking at all. This suggests that nearly 90% of Steam users tend to look at AI disclosures before buying a game, highlighting a strong awareness among PC gamers about the integration of AI in their gaming experiences.
It’s important to keep in mind that the survey respondents may not represent the entire Steam user base, as they tend to be more engaged than the average player. Nonetheless, these insights provide a glimpse into how a dedicated segment of the Steam community feels about the growing presence of AI in game development—an evolving topic that will undoubtedly shape the future of gaming.
