Take-Two’s Strauss Zelnick Talks GTA 6 Pricing: A Focus on Value Over Maximizing Profits
With all the buzz surrounding the pricing of GTA 6, Take-Two’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, recently addressed concerns about how much players should expect to shell out for this blockbuster title. Instead of trying to push prices to the max, Zelnick made it clear that the focus is on providing real value to gamers.
For a while, there were wild speculations about whether Rockstar Games might set the price for GTA 6 as high as $100 (approx. Rs 27,800). However, when pre-orders kicked off back in June, it was revealed that the game would launch at an $80 (approx. Rs 22,240) price tag, similar to what Mario Kart World saw with the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 last year. But here’s the thing: this doesn’t mean that $80 (approx. Rs 22,240) is the new standard for all of Take-Two’s upcoming titles. In fact, Zelnick pointed out that their other major release, NBA 2K27, will stick to the traditional $70 (approx. Rs 19,460) pricing when it drops this September.
During a recent investor call, someone asked Zelnick why GTA 6 was given a higher price point. He reiterated that their main goal is to give players way more value than they pay for. “The actual cost of a AAA video game is much lower today compared to two decades ago,” he remarked. He went on to say that calling GTA 6 a bargain is an understatement, especially since Rockstar has a reputation for exceeding expectations. He pointed out that it’s been 13 years since GTA Online launched, and the game still manages to attract record engagement—a testament to Rockstar’s commitment to delivering quality experiences.
Zelnick emphasized that while the excitement around GTA 6 could have led them to consider various pricing strategies, their priority remains on providing exceptional value rather than chasing maximum profits. Although pre-orders are looking good, he reminded everyone that it’s still too early to celebrate. “Pre-orders can be canceled, so we don’t take a victory lap before the game launches,” he stressed.
Analysts are certainly optimistic about GTA 6’s launch, projecting that it could rake in up to $5 (approx. Rs 1,390) billion within its first week. On a different note, there are ongoing discussions about working conditions for the developers, with unions recently stating that their first meeting with Rockstar management was a positive step forward.
All in all, it looks like fans can expect an exciting ride when GTA 6 finally hits the shelves, delivering plenty of value for their investment.
