Guided by the talents of composer Masayoshi Soken, alongside localization lead Michael-Christopher Koji Fox and talented musicians Eikichi Iawi, Tetsuya Tachibana, and GUNN, they deliver a powerful sound characterized by gritty guitars and high-octane vocals.

“[Download] took us around the festival site before we started, and the buggy that was supposed to take us back didn’t come. So we didn’t get back until like, 10 minutes before we were supposed to go to the stage!”
He explained how, instead of succumbing to nerves, they were thrust into action which fueled their performance. “By the time you get on the stage, it’s like ‘go, go, go’!”
Crafting the Setlist
The Primals showcased an impressive range of songs during their short but powerful set. Soken emphasized the importance of curating a setlist that resonated not just with die-hard fans but also with newcomers:
“Not everyone knew [Final Fantasy] 14, so we wanted to make the most of the time we had.”

“10, 15 years ago, there was game music and there was rock music. And there was a divide in between the two.”
Today, however, that divide is fading, with fans embracing this unique fusion. Koji added that video game music has always had potential; it was just constrained by the technology of earlier times.
“You go back and listen to soundtracks from Mega Man, and you realize they hit hard.”

So, what’s on the horizon for The Primals after conquering such a massive festival? According to Soken, a new album is on the way, packed with rearrangements from the acclaimed Dawntrail raid series. The band is also eager to spread their music globally, aiming to connect with fans in places they’ve never performed before.
