The Primals Rock Out at the UK’s Biggest Festival: A Final Fantasy 14 Journey

Every now and then, it’s a thrill to witness the worlds of rock music and video game soundtracks collide. For many fans, this exciting fusion often points back to one iconic title—Final Fantasy 14.

The Primals: A Rock Band Like No Other

At the heart of this musical blend is The Primals, the official rock band for Final Fantasy 14. Guided by the talents of composer Masayoshi Soken, alongside localization lead Michael-Christopher Koji Fox and talented musicians Eikichi Iawi, Tetsuya Tachibana, and GUNN, they deliver a powerful sound characterized by gritty guitars and high-octane vocals.

When The Primals hit the stage at the Download Festival, the UK’s premier rock and metal event, it was a moment to remember. This marked their first performance outside of Asia, and despite a tight schedule, their energy was infectious.

The Pre-Show Hurdles

After their explosive set, I had the chance to chat with Soken, Fox, and GUNN, and it was clear they were still buzzing from the performance, even after a night of rest. Fox shared a humorous insight about the chaos leading up to their stage time:

“[Download] took us around the festival site before we started, and the buggy that was supposed to take us back didn’t come. So we didn’t get back until like, 10 minutes before we were supposed to go to the stage!”

He explained how, instead of succumbing to nerves, they were thrust into action which fueled their performance. “By the time you get on the stage, it’s like ‘go, go, go’!”

Crafting the Setlist

The Primals showcased an impressive range of songs during their short but powerful set. Soken emphasized the importance of curating a setlist that resonated not just with die-hard fans but also with newcomers:

“Not everyone knew [Final Fantasy] 14, so we wanted to make the most of the time we had.”

  • They selected five high-energy tracks, aiming to engage the audience effectively.
  • Soken noted that their focus was on heavy, powerful songs, ensuring a riveting performance.
  • Fox humorously mentioned their drummer almost felt like he was on the brink of collapse due to the intensity of the set.

Connecting Worlds Through Music

Watching a video game band electrifying a stage amidst a sea of rock fans underscored how much the two genres have converged over the years. GUNN remarked:

“10, 15 years ago, there was game music and there was rock music. And there was a divide in between the two.”

Today, however, that divide is fading, with fans embracing this unique fusion. Koji added that video game music has always had potential; it was just constrained by the technology of earlier times.

“You go back and listen to soundtracks from Mega Man, and you realize they hit hard.”

What’s Next for The Primals?

So, what’s on the horizon for The Primals after conquering such a massive festival? According to Soken, a new album is on the way, packed with rearrangements from the acclaimed Dawntrail raid series. The band is also eager to spread their music globally, aiming to connect with fans in places they’ve never performed before.

“The next goal: Primals world tour.”

It’s an exciting time for both The Primals and fans of Final Fantasy 14, as they continue to bridge the gap between gaming and live music, creating unforgettable experiences for all. Keep your eyes peeled for more thrilling updates!
