The Story Behind American McGee’s Alice: A Glimpse into Gaming History

American McGee’s Alice may not have topped the charts, but it certainly carved out a niche for itself as a beloved cult classic. Even after 26 years since its debut, fans are still clamoring for a new installment. Recently, McGee took to X to share an interesting tidbit about what fueled his creativity for the game, revealing it coincided with a pivotal moment in his career at id Software.

McGee’s journey began at id Software, where he initially worked in tech support before moving on to level design for iconic titles like Doom and Quake. He recalled a memorable day when the team was deep into development for Quake 2. Everyone gathered in Paul Steed’s office to check out some impressive tech demo from Valve. “I remember watching a cinematic scene with characters seamlessly interacting, complete with a crane and multiple cameras to elevate the narrative,” McGee recounted, reflecting on the experience. “I let out a breathless ‘WOW,’ and suddenly, the whole room turned to shoot me a glare.”

That moment sparked something within McGee. He realized he wanted to use that technology to tell stories, something he felt his colleagues weren’t interested in pursuing. In response to skeptics online who doubted his account, he clarified that he wasn’t referencing Half-Life or any final product; it was more of a behind-the-scenes look at what Valve was developing at the time.

Shortly after this eye-opening experience, McGee found himself out of a job at id Software. Quake 2 launched in December 1997, and by October 1998, he was let go. The reasons behind his dismissal remain somewhat mysterious, with John Carmack mentioning that McGee’s work wasn’t meeting expectations. Some speculated that internal politics might have played a role. However, McGee soon recognized that the incident at Valve was a harbinger of his future direction. “On the day I got fired, I first cried, and then, while driving home with a box of my belongings, I started smiling. I knew I wanted to push the boundaries of surreal visuals and cinematic storytelling.”

This drive led him to join EA, where he gave life to American McGee’s Alice. Later, he set up shop in China, launching a new studio named Spicy Horse, where he developed the sequel, Alice: Madness Returns. In 2023, EA turned down a proposal for a third Alice game, prompting McGee to step back from game development. But earlier this year, he excitedly announced his return to the gaming world, planning a spiritual successor to the beloved series, inspired by his Plushy Dreadful stuffed toys. The legacy of Alice continues to evolve, and fans are eager to see what comes next!
