Darrah, who was the executive producer behind beloved titles like Dragon Age and the controversial Anthem, recalled how he spent much of his career in the role of a “professional non-expert.” He believes that having a layman’s viewpoint during discussions about design, art, and audio can offer a refreshing reality check. This perspective helps to keep the lofty ideas from experts grounded, ensuring they don’t get too lost in their own technical jargon.

“Disciplines can get pretty insular,” Darrah noted, explaining that conversations among specialists might often spiral into detailed discussions that can become confusing for outsiders. When designers dive too deep into the technicalities of their craft, the core message of the game might get tangled in complexity. Writers might obsess over intricate timelines and fictitious terms, while artists can get bogged down in minute details that may not resonate with the average gamer.

According to Darrah, a non-expert’s ability to raise their hand and admit they’re struggling to understand the subtleties can be a signal that things are getting too complicated. This isn’t to say that the intricate details should be disregarded, but rather that they need to be presented in a way that speaks to the game’s audience.

For this kind of feedback to be effective, however, Darrah emphasizes an important point: the non-expert must know when to hold back. “If you’re the outside voice, it’s crucial not to feel the need to dominate the conversation with your input,” he said. “You may not have the same level of knowledge as others at the table, and that’s okay!”

When a non-expert starts to overstep, it can create tension within the team, as they may have to sift through ungrounded suggestions. Darrah concluded by stating, “Having an external voice is valuable, but that person should recognize that they don’t need to be the loudest in the room.” This balance can lead to a richer and more accessible gaming experience for everyone involved.
