Thick As Thieves: Final Farewell to Content Updates

It’s been a wild ride for Thick As Thieves, the stealth game from OtherSide Entertainment that hit the market in May. Unfortunately, it seems like the game never quite found its footing and has been officially declared done with any future content updates. Game director Jeff Hickman shared the news, stating, “To be frank, this is not the outcome that any of us want.”

When Thick As Thieves launched, it felt more like a work in progress than a fully polished title. With just two maps to explore, players were left wanting more. The gameplay did offer some twists by switching objectives between these maps in both solo and co-op modes, but many gamers found the experience lacking. Adding to the frustration were issues like an unclear time-limit system and the absence of features like customizable controls at launch, which left some players feeling a bit jilted.

While the team did roll out a patch to include rebindable keys after launch, it wasn’t enough to shake off the game’s rough start. Compounding the problems, OtherSide faced a major setback when the development of another title was scrapped, leading to layoffs that have reduced the team to fewer than ten members.

Despite the tough circumstances, Hickman reassured fans that Thick As Thieves will not be forgotten. The remaining team is collaborating with publisher Megabit to create a new version of the game that will utilize Peer-to-Peer servers for co-op play. This means that while dedicated servers will be a thing of the past, players will still be able to enjoy the game with friends and the solo experience will remain unaffected.

It’s worth pondering how the game’s $5 (approx. Rs 1,390) launch price may have influenced its perception. It gave off a vibe of desperation that may have made players question its quality, as if it was a rushed attempt to fund future projects rather than a standalone experience. Nonetheless, it seems likely that Thick As Thieves was always destined to cater to a niche audience, regardless of pricing strategies or initial concept.

As we look back, it’s clear the gaming industry can be as unforgiving as it is rewarding. For now, fans of Thick As Thieves will have to cherish the experience they have, as the game heads into uncharted waters with its new server model.

Note: PKR figures are approximate, based on a rate of Rs 278.00 per USD. Exchange rates fluctuate — please check the latest dollar rate for exact pricing.
