Ubisoft Pulls the Plug on Champions Tactics: A Look Back at the NFT Misadventure

Ubisoft launched this game back in 2024, well after the initial hype around NFTs had fizzled out, as companies began focusing on the next big thing—AI. Despite the rocky road of their previous NFT attempts, Ubisoft decided to push ahead with not one, but two NFT titles that year. That’s pretty bold considering their VP of Strategic Innovations had previously stated that people just didn’t get the value of NFTs. Talk about mixed signals!
Fast forward to today, and it seems that all those lofty ambitions have come crashing down. Ubisoft announced, “Today, we’re sharing an important update regarding the future of Champions Tactics. After careful consideration, we have made the decision to sunset the game.” The servers will officially go offline on October 30. Until then, players can still enjoy the game, and Ubisoft is committed to making the last few months enjoyable for everyone.
This isn’t the first major shift for Champions Tactics; earlier this year, Ubisoft began phasing out its NFT features, citing impending changes to the blockchain infrastructure that supported the game. In May, they even removed the ability to mint and trade NFT characters, some of which were originally priced in the tens of thousands right after launch. Talk about a rollercoaster!
After the NFT functionality was stripped away, those once-unique characters now morphed into standard video game avatars. So much for non-fungibility, right?
But hey, for the dedicated players who managed to reach Divine rank in recent seasons, Ubisoft has sweetened the deal with a reward in Might & Magic Fates—a digital trading card game they launched in February. Players will be able to earn and trade cards through an external marketplace, so it looks like they’re still trying to make this Web3 thing work!
Champions Tactics didn’t exactly capture the hearts of many. It only made headlines when a pesky matchmaking bug caused chaos, trapping players with an unbeatable opponent for an entire weekend. Ouch!
