Wildgate to Conclude Development After Upcoming Update: A Journey Comes to an End

In a bittersweet announcement, the unique PvPvE title Wildgate is set to end its development after a year of hard-fought battles to attract players. Game director Dustin Browder shared the news through a recent update on Steam, revealing that despite the dedication of the team at Moonshot Games, the game hasn’t managed to capture a large enough audience to justify ongoing updates.

Browder reassured fans that while Wildgate may be winding down, it’s not disappearing entirely. The game will continue to receive sporadic updates, including essential bug fixes, balance adjustments, and occasional events that will utilize existing content. Plus, new players can still grab the game across various platforms.

Looking ahead, Browder hinted that there’s a possibility for a future revival. He mentioned that the upcoming July patch would be the game’s “last big update for a while,” designed to keep players engaged. This patch is expected to enhance user experience with more information on game modes, new options for custom games, fresh sprays and items in the store, in addition to tweaks and fixes for balance issues.

As for the future of Moonshot Games, the situation is a bit uncertain. While a small team will still oversee the game’s servers, community management and player support will see a reduction, with plans to hand over the Wildgate Discord to community members. However, a spokesperson for the studio has assured fans that there are no plans for layoffs, indicating that the core team will shift focus to new projects down the line.

This announcement marks a challenging chapter for yet another multiplayer shooter trying to carve its niche in a crowded market. Wildgate had its moments, showcasing creativity and potential, but ultimately fell short of expectations. Some players appreciated its innovative approach, while others felt that the execution didn’t fully deliver on the concept.

With its mixed reviews on Steam, where it holds a “mostly positive” rating, the game struggled to maintain its player base post-launch, even after attempting to introduce PvE-focused modes and a free trial version. Here’s hoping that Moonshot Games finds greater success with their future projects.
