WoW Classic Players Beware: A Bug in Stonetalon Mountains is Creating Hidden Hazards

If you’re diving into World of Warcraft Classic, watch your step while leveling up in certain areas of Kalimdor. Players on Reddit have shared some alarming news about the latest patch causing a glitch where swarms of enemies are appearing beneath the ground in the Stonetalon Mountains, and it’s especially dangerous for those who play on hardcore mode.

One player, known as Party-Signature-8700, uploaded a nail-biting video showing their undead warrior nearly facing a game-over moment after getting too close to this secret stash of hostile mobs, managing to escape with barely any health left. While this bug is wreaking havoc in 2026, it’s likely tied to a programming quirk that dates back over two decades.

Curious about what’s going on? It seems that there’s more to this bug than just a few misplaced enemy mobs. If you check the video and screenshots shared, you’ll spot some critters you wouldn’t normally encounter in Stonetalon, like Drywallow Daggermaws and Muckshell Clackers, which typically hang out in the higher-level Dustwallow Marsh area.

So, how did they end up lurking underground in Stonetalon? For seasoned WoW players, the location of this glitch might ring a bell. Understanding this issue requires a quick dive into WoW’s design history. In the earlier days of WoW, each server housed one large, shared world for its continents, allowing players to roam from one end of Kalimdor to the other without any loading screens.

To keep everything running smoothly, the server tracked the location of every NPC on a massive coordinate plane. But what happens when things go awry? If the server loses track of an enemy’s location, it defaults to tossing that entity back to the origin point at coordinates (0, 0, 0). In the case of Kalimdor, that origin point is located just beneath the ground in the Stonetalon Mountains.

This explains why players have shared stories about finding their characters near a graveyard in Stonetalon after disconnecting during a zeppelin ride over Kalimdor. Because the character was in motion during the hiccup, the server opted to drop them at a safe spot near (0, 0, 0) instead of risking a misplacement.

Right now, it seems that the latest patch is causing some sort of mix-up in positioning, leading the servers to misplace mobs across Kalimdor and send them to Stonetalon as a fallback. This glitch results in an underground gathering of hostile crocodiles and lobster men ready to ambush unsuspecting players.

Fortunately, a hotfix and server reset should resolve this issue soon. But until that happens, if you’re passing through Boulderslide Ravine, make sure you have your defensive abilities ready to go!
