Xbox in Turmoil? Top Studio Bosses Out, Layoffs Threaten Beloved Devs!
Hold onto your controllers, gamers! There’s a major buzz in the Xbox camp, and it’s not about a new game announcement. We’re hearing whispers, and some pretty loud reports, that two key figures from Xbox Game Studios have recently stepped down from their roles, right when the company is reportedly gearing up for a big “reset” that could shake things up significantly.
First up, Craig Duncan, who was the head honcho at Xbox Game Studios for about a year and a half, has reportedly exited the building. Before taking the reins of all Microsoft’s diverse studios – including big names like Double Fine, the teams behind Halo, inXile, Obsidian, Playground Games, and The Coalition – Duncan was a long-time leader at Rare, the studio responsible for classics like Sea of Thieves, for nearly 13 years. That’s a serious amount of experience walking out the door!
But wait, there’s more. Louise O’Connor, the Chief of Staff for Xbox Game Studios, has also reportedly resigned. Like Duncan, O’Connor has deep roots at Rare, where she started as an animator way back in 1999. She was promoted to her Chief of Staff role just last August, making her tenure quite short-lived as well.
These high-profile departures come at a crucial time for Xbox. With new leaders Asha Sharma and Matt Booty now at the helm – taking over after Phil Spencer’s retirement earlier this year – the word on the street is that a major “Xbox reset” is underway. Sharma and Booty recently hinted that Xbox has become “over-extended” due to its aggressive studio acquisition strategy. Translation? They bought a lot of studios, and now it might be time to streamline.
What does “streamline” mean in corporate speak? Well, reports from trusted industry sources suggest “significant” layoffs are being planned across Xbox’s various studios. This is the part that hits hard for many of us gamers. There are worrying rumors circulating that award-winning studio Compulsion Games, known for titles like We Happy Few, might be on the chopping block. Other beloved developers like Double Fine (Psychonauts series) and Ninja Theory (Hellblade, DmC) are also reportedly at risk, among others.
The gaming community in Pakistan and worldwide is naturally concerned about what this “reset” means for our favorite franchises and the talented people who create them. We’ve reached out to Microsoft for an official statement regarding these reported departures and the rumored restructuring, but have not yet received a response. We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available. For now, it seems like a period of big changes and uncertainty for the green brand.
