In a bit of a head-scratcher for the gaming world, Jared Palmer, who was recently appointed as Xbox’s Vice President of Engineering and a key technical advisor to CEO Asha Sharma, has already moved on. The surprising part? He was only in the role for a mere two months.

Palmer, whose appointment was seen as a significant move for the Xbox team, has updated his LinkedIn profile to confirm his departure. He’s now taken up the position of Vice President of Engineering at Cognition, an AI company.

For those unfamiliar, Cognition is making waves in the tech scene with its flagship product, Devin. This is being touted as the world’s first autonomous software engineer – a system that can independently plan, write, test, and deploy production code. Pretty cutting-edge stuff, and clearly right up Palmer’s alley.

This quick exit isn’t entirely out of character when you look at Palmer’s recent career trajectory. Before his brief stint at Xbox, he spent eight months as the VP of Product in Microsoft’s CoreAI division, which, interestingly, was also headed by Asha Sharma before she took the reins at Xbox. Prior to that, he dedicated around four years to Vercel, an AI infrastructure company, as their Vice President of AI. It’s clear that the world of artificial intelligence is where his passion truly lies.

When Palmer joined Xbox, his mandate was substantial. Sharma had highlighted that he would be working directly with her to tackle “our most complex product and engineering problems, with a focus on developer tooling, taste, and infrastructure.” Taking on such a critical role, especially with the challenges and opportunities facing a gaming giant like Xbox, usually implies a longer commitment.

While we shouldn’t read too much into these things – it’s highly probable that Cognition presented an offer that was simply too good to refuse, or a role that aligned more perfectly with his core expertise – the optics of losing a hand-picked, vital executive so soon are, undeniably, a talking point.
