Blizzard Takes Action: Game Master Fired for Cheating in World of Warcraft
In a surprising turn of events, Blizzard Entertainment has fired one of its game masters (GMs) after it was discovered that he used his powers to instantly eliminate two bosses for some friends in World of Warcraft. This revelation came to light earlier this week when a Reddit user shared combat logs from a Mythic+ dungeon, showcasing a boss that went from nearly full health to dead in a split second, clearly thanks to the GM’s intervention.
The situation escalated when another Reddit user uncovered that the same GM had pulled off a similar stunt earlier in the dungeon run. One of the gamers involved later confessed on a Twitch stream that they had asked their GM buddy for a little favor, saying, “I go to my GM friend and I’m like bro please can you do me a solid? This thing has 20 million [health] bro, can you please just one-shot it?” This kind of request raised eyebrows in the community, especially since such instances of GM interference are rare these days.
Typically, GMs are not actively involved in most players’ experiences, with most customer support issues being handled through Blizzard’s website rather than in-game. The only time GMs might be around is when players are testing raid encounters on the Public Test Realm (PTR) or vying for world-first achievements in raids. The revelation that a GM was involved in such a casual dungeon run left many players shocked, as many thought GMs were a relic of the past.
In response to the uproar, community manager Randy “Kaivax” Jordan clarified the situation in a forum post, stating that this incident was the action of a single employee and violated Blizzard’s Code of Conduct. Furthermore, he confirmed that the company would also be taking measures against the player accounts involved in this misconduct.
Despite the widespread speculation regarding potential collusion among players and GMs in other Mythic+ runs, Blizzard reassured fans that this instance was isolated. Kaivax explained, “It has always been the case that a small number of Blizzard employees can use developer tools and spells on live servers to test and make urgent fixes when necessary. Every use of these internal tools is logged and monitored by our Platform Security team to ensure compliance with company policy.” This means that, while GMs have specific powers, any misuse is taken seriously.
As a result of these revelations, the specific Mythic+ dungeon run has been disqualified from rankings on Raider.io, although players can still review the events that unfolded. While it may not have been a high-profile dungeon, it certainly stirred up discussions across the gaming community.
