Double Fine Faces Tough Times: 23 Employees Laid Off Post-Independence

In a rather unfortunate turn of events, Double Fine Productions has let go of 23 employees, only a few weeks after being spun off as an independent studio from Xbox. This decision, as expressed by the studio, is aimed at ensuring their survival in the competitive gaming landscape.

In a message shared on Bluesky, Double Fine noted, “Our transition to becoming an independent company means we need to adapt to a size that we can sustain.” They emphasized that the employees affected were integral to their games and culture, and their absence will be deeply felt.

The news of the layoffs isn’t entirely shocking, especially considering the recent restructuring at Xbox, which saw a wave of job losses affecting around 3,200 individuals. While some applauded Xbox for allowing Double Fine to operate independently, the reality remains that the transition is challenging for a studio known for its quirky yet modestly selling titles, particularly with the current industry climate being so tough.

Interestingly, Compulsion Games, another studio that was cut loose by Microsoft, also signaled the need for more work just a week after their split. Many employees at Compulsion were reportedly already seeking new opportunities, anticipating that their positions would soon be at risk.

As for Double Fine, the exact number of employees remaining after these layoffs is unclear, but sources indicate that they had around 90 team members before the cutbacks.

Only time will tell how Double Fine navigates this challenging phase, but it’s a stark reminder of the ups and downs in the gaming industry.
