Tough Times for Double Fine: Studio Lays Off Staff After Splitting from Xbox
Hey PakGamers! We’ve got some pretty tough news coming out of the gaming world today that hits close to home for fans of unique and quirky titles. Double Fine Productions, the brilliant minds behind games like Psychonauts, Brutal Legend, and Costume Quest, has sadly had to let go of 23 members of its team.
This difficult decision comes right after the studio’s big move to go independent, stepping away from Xbox’s ownership. Tim Schafer, the legendary founder of Double Fine, shared the news, emphasizing just how painful this action was for their close-knit team. He stated that such a drastic step was only considered for the very survival of the studio.
“Our transition to becoming an independent company means becoming a size that we can sustain,” Schafer explained, highlighting the challenges of striking out on their own. To put it in perspective, before these layoffs, Double Fine had roughly 90 employees, meaning about a quarter of their staff has unfortunately been affected.
The impact is real, and it’s being felt by developers across the studio. One game designer, Ben Johnson, who was working on the game Kiln, even posted about being among those laid off just before the news went public. It’s a stark reminder of the human cost behind these corporate shifts.
Schafer expressed deep regret, acknowledging the significant contributions of every individual who was let go. “The people we are losing were all important. They all made an impact on our games and culture, and they will be missed,” he said, promising to support them as best as the studio can.
For those who might not remember, Double Fine was acquired by Microsoft as part of Xbox’s massive studio acquisition spree back in 2019. During their time under the Xbox banner, they released acclaimed titles like Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and Kiln. Schafer himself founded the studio way back in 2000 after leaving LucasArts, always known for his innovative and often cult-classic games.
This independence for Double Fine is actually part of a larger restructuring at Xbox, which has seen thousands of employees affected across various departments. Double Fine was one of four studios earmarked to become independent. While the freedom to chart their own course sounds exciting, this news shows that the path of independence isn’t always smooth sailing, and tough choices often have to be made for long-term viability.
