Far Cry TV Series Sparks Debate: Game Stories Worthy or Pointless?

This week, the gaming world found itself buzzing over comments made by Noah Hawley, the writer and director known for his work on Fargo and Alien: Earth. He’s gearing up to adapt Ubisoft’s popular Far Cry series for television, but his recent remarks have stirred up quite the conversation.

Hawley revealed that he won’t be directly lifting any of the existing game plots for his show, stating, “I want to have a dialogue with this franchise and explore what I believe a true Far Cry story is.” However, he didn’t stop there. He made waves by stating that “games are structured in a way that doesn’t lend itself to compelling drama.” His reasoning? When playing, gamers often zoom through gameplay, only pausing for cutscenes that can be easily skipped, which he believes diminishes the importance of human drama in storytelling. Ouch!

Unsurprisingly, his comments didn’t sit well with Alex Hutchinson, the director of Far Cry 4. He took to LinkedIn to express his displeasure, saying, “This is kinda pissing me off,” before elaborating in an interview with IGN. Hutchinson emphasized that gamers want their stories respected, not brushed aside. He added that while many might skip cutscenes, the narrative remains crucial in shaping player engagement, particularly through themes, settings, and character development.

“I’m not much of a cutscene-skipper myself,” Hutchinson remarked, questioning why anyone would bypass the narrative context in games like Resident Evil or Far Cry. He pointed out that the quality of storytelling in video games has significantly improved over the years, making it harder to disregard their narratives.

Continuing his critique, Hutchinson described the essence of Far Cry as placing a “normal” person in extraordinary circumstances, where the story evolves through player choices and interactions. He found it frustrating that Hawley dismissed the game narratives as meaningless, suggesting that while Hawley’s adaptations of Alien and Fargo have their merits, he might not fully appreciate the depth of video game storytelling.

Hutchinson didn’t hold back, even throwing some shade at Alien: Earth, suggesting the adaptation veered off course from the brand’s core elements. He expressed hope that Hawley can capture the essence of what makes stories in the Far Cry universe compelling, highlighting that the franchise offers a rich foundation for various narratives.

As of now, there are no concrete details about what we can expect from Hawley’s interpretation of Far Cry. Yet, if he misses the mark, those earlier comments might just come back to haunt him. The gaming community is watching closely!
