For All Mankind S5E6: When Revolution Hits a Martian Wall!

For All Mankind fans, get ready! The latest episode, Season 5 Episode 6, aptly titled “No Sudden Moves,” just dropped, and let’s just say things are heating up on the Red Planet. This season has been a rollercoaster, and this particular installment really throws a wrench into the works of the burgeoning Martian rebellion.

Remember the Sons and Daughters of Mars (SDM)? Well, they’ve finally made their big move, storming the Martian Operations Control Center (MOCC). We’re talking hostages, a beaten-up governor, and comms completely cut off – even for the Sojourner crew mid-flight! It’s all very dramatic, but here’s the kicker: it quickly becomes clear that beyond the actual takeover, these revolutionaries didn’t really have a solid ‘what next?’ plan. It’s a head-scratcher, especially since they’ve been organizing for ages and even pulled off an asteroid heist before. You’d think they’d have a clear list of demands ready, right? This lack of foresight makes their ‘righteous anger’ feel a bit aimless, which is a big point of contention in this episode.

Enter Miles (Toby Kebbell) and Boyd (Mireille Enos), two characters who weren’t exactly pegged as the heroes of Happy Valley. In a twist of fate, they find themselves trying to be the voice of reason amidst the chaos. Their mission? To get everyone to ‘chill out.’ It’s a fun dynamic, seeing the guy who’s been playing both sides and the ‘troublemaker’ colleague suddenly becoming the cooler heads. Their main strategy involves keeping weapons out of the hands of both the trigger-happy MPK and the anxious SDM.

But as one of the hostages, Irina, wisely points out, “Without the willingness to follow through on your threat, you have no leverage.” Even after Miles and Boyd help the SDM craft some demands and threaten to cut off iridium shipments to Earth, President Bragg (Randy Oglesby) back on Earth delivers a firm ‘no.’ The result? Mars is completely cut off from all essential supplies from Earth. Talk about a tough stance! Now, with Lee Jung-Gil (C.S. Lee) making his way back to Happy Valley, there’s hope he might step into the shoes of a stabilizing force, much like Ed often was.

On the performance front, Coral Peña absolutely shines as Aleida. Her character’s arrival on Mars has been a game-changer this season, and in this episode, she delivers by breaking through SDM lines to re-establish communication with the Sojourner crew heading to Titan. However, not everything was stellar. The blossoming romance between Alex (Sean Kaufman) and Lily (Ruby Cruz) felt incredibly shoehorned and frankly, a bit annoying. While ‘love in trying times’ is a nice sentiment, this particular subplot felt out of place and unnecessary, especially with all the high-stakes drama unfolding around them. At least they can hold hands while Mars burns, I guess?

Overall, “No Sudden Moves” is an episode packed with tension and big ideas about the messy reality of revolutions. While some aspects might leave you scratching your head, it certainly sets the stage for some serious consequences for both Mars and Earth.
