Heard an interesting update from the developers behind Brigador, Stellar Jockeys, who recently launched their follow-up, Brigador Killers, into early access. They've been discussing their design philosophy, particularly how they're inspired by the "show, don't tell" morality and storytelling prevalent in '90s PC classics. It's refreshing to hear them emphasize that those older games taught lessons not through explicit moralizing, but through player agency and the consequences of actions within the game world itself. This approach, avoiding heavy-handed narratives, resonates strongly with me as it allows for deeper player immersion and interpretation. I think more studios should consider this philosophy, especially with how often modern games try to spoon-feed us their messages.

Show do not tell is exactly what made those 90s PC classics so memorable. Letting players face the consequences of their own choices teaches far deeper lessons than any cutscene.
