The Sequel That Never Was: Planescape: Torment 2 Almost Happened
JauntyM · 1h ago
Planescape: Torment remains a timeless classic, often hailed as one of the greatest RPGs to ever hit the gaming scene. Fans have always yearned for a sequel that could live up to its legacy, and while we did get Torment: Tides of Numenera back in 2017, it didn’t quite capture the essence of the original.
In a recent chat, Trent Oster from Beamdog revealed that an official sequel, Planescape: Torment 2, was actually in the works! Yes, you heard that right. Oster shared that they had some really promising talks with Wizards of the Coast, who seemed genuinely excited about the concept. They discussed potential ties to source books and other ideas, which made the whole thing even more thrilling.
But alas, the excitement was short-lived. Despite their enthusiasm, Wizards of the Coast ultimately decided not to invest in the project. According to Oster, when they pitched the idea, Wizards hit them with the reality check: “We don’t have money for external development, we’re not doing that right now.” This isn’t the first time Wizards has played it tight with funding; they have a history of cycling between in-house projects and outsourcing, leading to some frustrating missed opportunities.
It wasn’t just Wizards who turned a blind eye to funding either. Oster mentioned that they reached out to several other potential backers, but the response was disheartening. Many questioned why they would want to spend money to enhance someone else’s intellectual property. Ouch! That’s a tough pill to swallow for fans who have poured hours into the beauty of Planescape: Torment.
While we do have gems like Baldur’s Gate 3 to enjoy, there’s just something about the unique narrative and world-building of Planescape that keeps our hearts yearning for more. The original game’s storytelling is still unmatched, and moments like hearing “updated my journal” can bring back a flood of nostalgia. It’s clear that many gamers are left dreaming of what could have been.
So, what do you think? Would you have loved to see Planescape: Torment 2 come to life? The RPG world could have been a lot richer with it, that’s for sure!
