Gaming Industry Shake-Up: Crossfire Developer That’s No Moon Faces Layoffs

The global gaming industry is once again facing a wave of unfortunate news, as reports confirm that That’s No Moon, the development studio behind the highly anticipated single-player title *Crossfire*, has been impacted by layoffs. While the exact number of employees affected remains undisclosed, former staff members have begun sharing their situation on professional networking sites, indicating that various roles, including technical and environmental artists, have been part of these reductions.

For those unfamiliar, That’s No Moon made its debut in 2021, founded by a team of seasoned industry veterans who previously contributed to powerhouse studios like Naughty Dog and Infinity Ward. Based in Los Angeles, the studio garnered significant attention when it unveiled its first major AAA project, a narrative-driven single-player game simply titled *Crossfire*, at Summer Game Fest 2026.

Even though *Crossfire* doesn’t have an official release date yet, gamers got an exciting sneak peek during an in-depth showcase presented alongside Geoff Keighley. One of the most intriguing features teased was a unique ‘adaptive cover’ mechanic. This innovative system allows characters to dynamically adjust their stances based on the surrounding terrain and nearby enemies, promising to reward players who strategically think, utilize stealth, and reposition effectively. Game director Jacob Minkoff highlighted how this mechanic fundamentally redefines a player’s interaction with the environment, turning cover into an active skill to master.

The game’s story plunges players into the journeys of two rival operators, Layla Qassem and Delroy Cross, forced into a fragile, temporary alliance to survive. Layla’s narrative kicks off with a routine reconnaissance mission in the Atlas Mountains that quickly spirals into a harrowing ordeal, challenging her deeply ingrained beliefs. Meanwhile, Cross, an elite operator from Global Risk, faces his own moral dilemmas during a critical mission for Sodara Biotech.

As you might have guessed, this single-player *Crossfire* adventure is set within the same universe as the popular multiplayer shooter of the same name. However, it shifts focus, diving deep into the individual stories of these two opposing faction members, compelling them into an unlikely partnership. The game is currently in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X, and you can already add it to your wishlist on Steam, the PlayStation Store, and the Microsoft Store.

These layoffs at That’s No Moon are unfortunately not an isolated incident. They follow a broader trend of studio restructuring and staff reductions seen across the gaming industry, including recent news involving developers like Double Fine. It’s a tough time for many talented individuals in the game development world, and our hearts go out to all those affected.
